Subject:   Is gas high in college towns?

Was in Montgomery Monday (9-25-2006). Paid $1.99 at the BP on the Shorter exit. Saw another Raceway station selling at same price in Montgomery.

Exited on US 29 to enter Auburn. Raceway there at $2.29. Those Raceways are about 20-25 miles apart, but gas is $.30 a gallon higher, about 15% higher. According to web, lowest prices in Lee County is $2.25.

Lots of gas stations in Auburn. I think station owners drive around and see competitor's gas prices and cut it a penny. Why dosen't this happen in Montgomery where prices do not seem to be "fixed"?

Could it be that student gas is bought by mom and dad, and they don't care what the price is as long as its convenient. Wonder if other college towns experience the same behvior?

Other ideas?

You may want to check the local taxes for the various municipalities to explain some of the differences..

I think the gas companies have more to do with the gas prices than the local stations. As we all know the individul gas stations make very little per gallon of gas (one to two cents no matter what the price). This is the reason so many individual stations have to have convenience stores or reparir shops to survive.

It will be intersting to see what happens to gas prices after the elections.

Obviously, you are implying "someone" is manipulating the price for the benefit of a political party. Is this same "someone" controlling hurricanes, unemployment, stock market, etc.?????

I think we were discussing gas prices vs. politics. It is rather interesting how gas prices have dropped between 75 cents and a dollar in the last month. Can you explain it? I will listen. There always seemed to be a reason for them to rise???

Supply and demand, no hurricanes, refineries up and running after their spring maintenance, ports open....I tend to be a skeptic regarding the effect of politics on the price of crude.

Gas always comes down after the summer vacation season. Also, I have a friend who has a Shell Station. He says another big reason is the EPA requires alot of different blends during the hot summer months to reduce smog/ pollution. These blends, additives or whatever add to the cost and they reduce these standards after summer thus, lower prices.

Generally speaking, it's always supply and demand, whether going up or down.

to the reasoning behind gas prices. What I would really like to know is how much of the speculation is controlled by big oil, OPEC, etc. There has been plenty of supply over the past two years, so supply and demand has NOT been at work. Mergers and buying up the little guys has had some impact. Wasn't it interesting how BP had this terrible problem in the Alaska pipelines that just seemed to fade away.

EXXON's BS about only making $0.10 profit per gallon has been an insult to all Americans. They own oil wells that produce tremendous profits. Maybe they only make ten cents from the refining process, but the story they told was that they only made .10 in the whole process.

Yes, the gas will go back up after the elections.

They use that extra money off of Gas in Auburn to make sure they pay the referees well for football games. Seems to be working out well for them.

I will disagree with you here regarding supply and demand. There has been a shortage of light, sweet crude oil which is the refineries preferred crude because they don't have to retool to process it, thereby easier and cheaper to refine. The market has been flooded with heavy, sour crude, which is much more expensive to refine because of the re-tooling process.

I have a friend who owns several Branded gas stastion, usually he averages about $.10 to $.12 per gallon profit. This past summer I called him several times to see what he was making and everytime it was like $.25 to $.27 per gallon and all he was doing was adjusting his price daily to market based on his competitors prices.

So make a long story short this past summer, at least $12 or so in the gas prices was just stations making additonal profits at the expesne of thier customers. But have you ever figured out what a gas station makes on a fill up at day $.12 per gallon and say 20 gallons = $2.40, this barely covers their operating and maintenance costs and cost of money if you charge the gas as it take like 4 days for them to receive their cash form the credit card companies.

Now with that said, Summer of 2005 after all the hurricanes, etc. He was only making like $.04 per gallon on average. So like $.80 on 20 gallons.

In a nutshell the indepedent gas station owner for the most part does not control the price of gas the middle east does and the US corporations just charge what OPEC is charging per barrell, therefore they had windfall profits over the past 2 years or so.

Interesting consumer article--but, if a $15 cut in crude pricing results in a $0.36 cut in pump gas prices, why do we have about a 90 cent drop is gas while the crude price is down only $15 per barrel from its all time high of $78. The probable source for the MSNBC article was the Oil Institute or some other oil industry propaganda machine. Who are these mysterious oil traders? That is the key.

See, the new boat restriction is already helping with gas prices. :)

Actually, the prices began to come down when the lake level started dropping. Instead of a government conspiracy, could it be.......Alabama Power in control of the gas supply.

Got to be a conspiracy causing the gas prices to fluctuate; nothing natural would work this way. Some of it may be differences in taxes, but not much. If that was the case, wouldn't food be 10-percent higher in Auburn than Opelika?

Want in interesting conversation? Just ask the clerk at the mini-mart who is the person who sets the gas prices. (If you speak the same language)
