Being a true Dawg...this is hard...but, here goes...

As found on the internet…..

Want a non-biased fact-based evaluation on the recent history of the University of Alabama football program? Consider these numbers:

We’re at the midpoint of the 14th season since Alabama won the 1992 college football national championship. To put that in perspective … the freshmen on the current Alabama team were 3-4 years old in 1992. So, this basically covers all of the years about which any of those players can remember during their entire lifetime.

There are three major traditional opponents which Alabama has played in each of those seasons … Tennessee, LSU and Auburn. Bama has played those three teams a total of 40 times since winning the 1992 title. Alabama has won only 14 of those 40 games. Against LSU the record is 6-7, against Auburn 5-8, and against Tennessee 3-11.

How about the current decade … the seven years beginning with the 2000 season? Alabama has played 19 times against those three opponents. Alabama has won 4 and lost 15. The record against Tennessee is 2-5, against LSU is 1-5, and against Auburn is 1-5. Auburn has won four straight. LSU has won three straight and four of the past five.

For comparison, Auburn has played three major traditional opponents in each of those same 14 seasons … LSU, Georgia and Alabama. Auburn has also played those three teams a total of 40 times since 1992. Auburn’s record in those games is 24-15-1. Against LSU the record is 8-6, against Georgia is 8-4-1, and against Alabama is 8-5.

Auburn has played those same three opponents 19 times in the current decade. Since 2000, Auburn has won 13 and lost only 6 against those teams, having a winning record against them all. Against LSU the record is 4-3, against Georgia is 4-2, and against Alabama is 5-1.

So, despite delusional rantings to the contrary, with very few exceptions, it has been a long time since Alabama has been a consistent major factor in the Southeastern Conference or national picture, or since they have held the upper hand against any major SEC football program. Even if they could somehow upset LSU or Auburn to end the 2006 season, it would only provide a brief emotional lift, not changing the overall reality. Alabama football has now long been a middle-of-the-road program, usually better than the also-ran teams . although there were losses to Northern Illinois, Central Florida, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii and Minnesota during this time . but usually better than those teams. But, nowhere near an elite power program ... which is where Auburn, LSU and Tennessee have been annually located with few exceptions during the time since Alabama was last on top.

very interesting.

Alabama has had some good "name brand" coaches...whose reputations have preceeded them...but I guess that just isn't enough for them in light of your info.

What's your point!!!

Bama has been down more than up in the past decade...

But...

1995 they were on probation.
1996 Stallings took them to the SEC Championship game.
1997 Dubose took over and we had a 4-7 year.
1998 was 7-4 but they beat Auburn
1999 they were the SEC Champions
2000 was a disaster and Dubose was fired.
2001 they went 7-5 under Franchione and beat Auburn
2002 they went 10-3 with NCAA sanctions and Franchione deserted
2003 Mike Shula came in to try to pick up the pieces after the Price ordeal
2004 they were 6-6 with the sanctions really hitting hard
2005 they were 9-2
2006 they are mid-pack but should be about to turn the corner.

Want to talk about total from the past 50 years:

National Championshps?
SEC Championships?
Bowl appearances?
Bowl wins?
Players in the NFL.?

Was listening to the radio today and they were talking about Shula.Do you realize that he is 1-11 against LSU, AU and Tenn. His only win was last year against a Tenn team that did not even make it to a bowl.

You should realize that Bama fans are so delusional, the LAST thing they want is such factual data. That would fly in the face of all the delusion. Dont you know that when the Bear was coaching they had some great seasons?! Course he has been DEAD for about twenty five years, but who's counting?!!! Delusional Bamas--don't wake them! They are fun to watch!!1

You are 100% correct. It has been very very painful. Shula's honeymoon will be over after this year. It will be time to produce.

I'm not the least bit delusional. The facts speak for themselves as has been noted above.

Alabama can however boast of a fine history of football. Alabama has one of the nicest stadiums in the nation and has created some of the finest athelitics facilities in the nation. The Bear was arguably the finest coach in history and left some mighty big shoes to fill. May he rest in peace.

I think most alabama fans cherish the memories but are hoping that Shula will be successful. He has, at the very least, brought some respect and dignity back to T-town.

Roll Tide and enjoy your success while you have it.

Bamabob3, me being a Ga. fan, agree that The BEAR was the greast college coach that ever lived. And he would punt on 3rd down, ask the Irish. The Texas and Alabama game back in the 60`s was one of the best games I ever seen. Joe Willie had a bad ankle and a linebacker named Nobis helped him up on every play that he got sacked.

My point is - with names like Shula, Franchione, Stallings, and Dubose - some former Alabama players and offspring of great football legends - one would think Alabama would be blessed.

I guess all Bama Fans are "Delusional" as you call it. Well, all i can say is i have seen Alabama do something in my 27 years of existense that you have never seen Auburn do and that is win a National Championship. It just shows how ignorant you are when you lump all the Alabama fans together with the ones out there that dont want admit that Bama has been down. Any rational Bama fan (And yes there are MANY< MANY of those out there) will tell you that Alabama has been down. All you Auburn fans always get on Bama fans about talking about "The Past". Well, all I can say, is at least Bama fans have a lot to talk about. You could sum up Auburns past in a 2 minute conversation.

Your delusion that Auburn's academics is so much higher that Alabama's is interesting.

It could be that UAB, Samford, Troy, Birmingham Southern might rate higer in some areas they Alabama or Auburn.

On the job training. Having one of the best NFL coaches in history as your father can't hurt. This is his 4th year as a head coach. How good was Bear in his 4th year..or the "Old Ball Coach" ...or Bowden..or Paterno..etc.

you bring up a good point. As my kids go through the college selection process, it is evident that many schools have both strong and week areas. Auburn has more strong area than Alabama, and some of the schools you mentioned also have strong areas.

My daughter ( a HS senior) is interested in chemical engineering and will go to Ga Tech if she gets accepted (she is already accepted to Auburns engineering dept) . She chose Auburn over Alabama and Ga Tech over Auburn because of the quality of education. She is not choosing a football team.

To answer your question:

Bear Bryant: in his fourth year, he led Kentucky to a record of 5-3-2; this was after seasons of 6-2-1 (at Maryland), 7-3 and 8-3.

Bobby Bowden: in his fourth year, he led Samford to a record of 7-2, following seasons of 9-1, 9-1 and 7-2.
If Samford doesn't count because it was a small school, then his record looks like this: in his fourth year at West Virginia he went 6-5, following seasons of 8-3, 7-4 and 8-4.

Steve Spurrier: in his fourth year, he led Florida to arecord of 9-2 (they were on probation, so no bowl.) In the three previous years he was at Duke, and led then to an overall record of 20-13-1.

Joe Paterno: His fourth team went 11-0 and finished second in the polls, behind Ohio St. (His fifth team also went 11-0, and finished second to Texas.) His first three teams went 5-5, 8-2 and 8-2.

"It just shows how ignorant you are when you lump all the Alabama fans together with the ones out there that dont want admit that Bama has been down."

It appears that you are falling into the same trap...."All you Auburn fans always get on Bama fans about talking about "The Past"."

Also, don't forget this string was started by a Georgia fan....not Auburn.

However, all that being said, I was at Auburn during the Barfield years. Shula's coaching ability FAR outweighs what we had to endure.

That's great! I knew someone could/would answer that question. Now considering the circumstances facing Shula apon his arrival I will no be be so quick to judge, although we all know, If you don't WIN you won't be around too long.

That is fantastic. I know you are proud of her. I wish her luck. All this football jabber is just for us to have something to do.

My daughter is only a Jr. in HS and is interested in aerospace engineering. We have that in front us us as well. She is on track for full scholarship...but her cousins vent to Ivy league schools. I think both Auburn and Alabama have good programs. In fact, she has already been in contact with the Dean of Engineering @ Alabama. He has personally invited her to participate in a week long program for perspective students. I hope she will check it out.

I was just stirin' the pot in my first post...as you say, something to do and I'm in with a bad cold.

I think we both agree that a good education is primary and an engineering degree from any of these schools would be something to be proud of.

What does your daughter want to do in the aerospace field?

I'm not positive. She has mentioned astrophisicist (not sure of the spelling or what one does at this late hour...gotta change the stupid time back tonight). She is currently doing work study at the planitarium @ Birmingham Southern and gets to move the stars and planets around. She loves it. Got to get to work now.

I am not sure of what you all do for a living, but in our case, isn't it great (just like our parents wanted for us) for the next generation to go "above and beyond" what we all do?

I guess they will need to. Like our parents said, "What's this world coming to?"
