I haven't seen anything on the forum regarding the Ethanol Plant that was announced to open in Dadeville sometime 2008 according to al.com (link attached).

It seems like it has some good and BAD. Any opinions?

Alex City paper had an article yesterday questioning the ability of the Dadeville sewage treatment plant to handle the new Kia auto parts plant as well as the ethanol plant sewage. Hopefully, the Lake Martin and the tree hugger organizations will look into to this to be sure the lake is protected.

Dadeville currently dumps an average of around 250,000 gallons of treated sewage into the lake every day. I didn't know that.

Below is a link from todays Outlook. It addresses concerns that have been expressed by the local naysayers. It never stops amazing me that some folks can only find the negative in any news. These plants are going to be the impetus of great changes for the local economy. EVERYONE should be rejoicing in the good news, not looking for ANY excuse to scream doom and gloom. How anybody can think that smart, eco-freindly businessmen would even consider investing a 135 million to build a plant in an area that did not have the infrastructure to handle it is beyond me.

The key word in the Osms post is TREATED!! Now it seems to me that what the 'powers that be' should be concerned about upgrading is the fire protection for Dadeville and surrounding areas. Dadeville is growing and it seems to me that the time has come for a fulltime PAID fire department, IMHO.

Now that I have stirred todays puddin, I will climb down off my soapbox.

If you had read what I said, it was yesterday's article that concerns me. That article was based on information that indicated that fecal bacteria levels of treated sewage released sometimes exceed acceptable levels even without the additional sewage from the plants. If I remember correctly during heavy rains some storm drainage enters the sanitary sewer system that makes it exceed it's 80% of capacity level which in turn causes a released of raw, untreated sewage into Sandy Creek two miles from Lake Martin -- THAT AIN'T GOOD. Additional sewage from these plants just means the chance for raw, untreated sewage in the lake increases.

The article you attached, which I had read, is pretty much a newspaper reporter's ignorant attempt to give the plant owner an opportunity to put his spin on the addition of the plant to this area.

While I'm no tree hugger, I'm a Lake Martin lover and I don't think we should bury our heads in the sand over 50 jobs for Dadeville.

Thanks LTL for setting the record straight. If anyone wants more information on the condition of the Dadeville wastewater treatment plant, see http://www.epa.gov/cgi-bin/get1cReport.cgi?tool=echo&IDNumber=AL0063797 (sorry for the lengthy website but that's how the EPA works).

Since I represent Lake Watch, here is our position on the issue. Lake Watch does not object to the ethanol plant in Dadeville and supports it PROVIDED our environmental concerns are satisfied. We think that is a reasonable approach that does not inhibit industrial growth while protecting what some refer to as the economic engine of our future.

After reading the EPA information, it should be clear that any new discharge into the existing treatment plant simply adds to the overload that currently causes by-pass of untreated sewage into the Sandy Creek part of Lake Martin. No matter whether you are a tree-hugger or someone who cares for the lake, that's a problem that must be addressed. And the issue is being addressed to the Dadeville City Council and the Tallapoosa County Commission.

This will make it easier to see EPA info.

Thanks for staying on top of this issue. This could be a serious problem with over flow if not properly planned from the beginning. Atlanta has been overflowing into the Chattahoochee for years.

I'm glad I live a long way from Sandy Creek. Are there other areas on the lake that have similar (current) discharge problems?

Please keep us posted on this matter. Can't help but remember the recent effort by some city fathers in Alex City to approve a chickin' pluckin' plant for the city that came complete with 150 illegal immigrant workers plus the camp followers. The short sightedness of some people amazes me.

I'll keep you posted. One of the problems is that some of the same people who tried to get the chicken processing plant in Alex City last year are the ones who have been working on the ethanol plant for nearly a year. Our concern is that due diligence seems to missing.

There are lots of full time residents of Dadeville/Sandy Creek that can be mobilized if needed --please keep us up to date.

There is going to be a meeting of the Tallapoosa County Commision Mon Feb 12 at 9AM at the Courthouse at 125 N Broadnax in Dadeville.

If you are a Christian, thank God.
If you are free, thank a soldier.
If you can breath a fresh breath of air, thank a tree hugger.
