Maybe this year will make some developers think twice before building some of these sea doo houses. Purchasers will become aware of the importance of deep water.

Every time I go over the dam I am amazed at the volume of water flowing down the river. The river is right up to the tree line with no visible bank. Now i do not do this often but I have at least 4 times in 2007 and it has looked the same each time. It seems that some of that water could be detained and help the lake level. I know the standard answer is the corp or licensing requirements, but there should be some leeway for times of drought.

When I go over the Tallpoosa River bridge on Hwy 231 at the Montgomery-Elmore County line, the river looks very low. I am surprised they are still slowly raising the lake.

What you're seeing below the dam is the natural river bed and the head waters of the next small lake down stream which does not go up and down; it just passes the Martin release through it's power generators, if it can.

This article is in todays Talladega Daily Home. Granted that Logan Martin is on the Coosa but it's watershed is virtually the same as Martin.

For those of you that wont read the link, it is ana article detailing how they have sought and recieved permission to raise the level at an increased timtable BECAUSE of the drought. The corp has already approved two feet and Alabama power has requested another two feet.

This is one of those things that make me go Hmmmm....

Thanks for the info, as I travel to Atlanta weekly and have been wondering why Logan Martin's water level is currently so high as compared to past years. The article may be the answer.

Also, this winter Logan Martin did not drop anywhere near as low as previous years as the Condo pontoon boats you can see from I-20 were never on the lake bed this year and I have been driving the Bham to Atlanta drive for over 10 years and this is the first year I can remember the pontoon boats not sitting on the lake bed in Jan, Feb and even March.

Really make you wonder why LM is still being managed in the same old manner, when Logan Martin was able to change its lake level criteria.

Who do we need to call, LOL !!!!!

Read this excerpt from the article:

Alabama Power spokesman Buddy Eiland said is an attempt to hold on to the water from recent rains in anticipation of an unusually dry year.

“We’re trying to get the lake up a little early,” Eiland said. “We have available water from rainfalls. They have been very concerned about the amount of water … This is shaping up to be one of the worst years as far as rainfall.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees dam operations, recently granted Alabama Power a variance on releases that will allow the lake’s level to climb to 462 feet above sea level before April 1, when levels are usually allowed to be raised.

Alabama Power has requested another variance to allow the level to be raised to 464 feet, but the Corps has not yet answered the request.

I read the article and understand also that the Corp requires releases of water to maintain commercial navigable channels downstream (Alabama River). The problem with that is if the Coosa River is allowed to hold back water then the Tallapoosa (Martin) has to make up what the Coosa holds back--somebody 's got to give up the water--do we get screwed?

Remember the Corp required Lake Lanier to flush the Chattahoochee this past summer--much to the detriment of Lanier boaters. All I can say at this point is--glad I got deep water. Pray for rain!!

I have emailed Alabama Power to see if they can provide any insight on their thoughts with regard to Lake Martin this year, based on their anticipated draught.

Do not know, if it will do any good, but you never know, it sure will not hurt to ask.

As soon as everybody thinks there is no water coming there will be a flood. I'd say this string is a contrarian indicator :-)

What's up with you people and these newspapers? Everybody knows that its way too early to be worrying about the lake level. So I am going to sit here ignorantly and attack you dumb alarmists for discussing the topic...

In all seriousness, can you imagine trying to move condos this summer when all you get is a fixed dock like most of the condos being built or already in existence? This WILL have a big affect on property values and contrary to what you might think it is NOT a good thing for those of us with deepwater and homes either before you get too smug...better for sure but not good. Alternatively, this could be a buying opportunity this summer...

I rememember back in the summer of '88 when I lived on Lake Lanier it was one of the worst lake levels in memory. The press was going crazy, Atlanta was going to dry up, people were going to die...you know, kinda like the global warming thing (which I call global goober because we are the ones who will get goobered over this)

Anyway the TV folks interviewed an old timer country boy that had property adjoining the lake and asked him his opinion about the lake level catastrophe. He said WelI........ I see it's down but ....it will probably be full by spring. It was.

I am getting old but I remember that AL Power applied for and received permission to reduce the draw-down at Logan Martin and Weiss and to keep the full pool for 2 more months out of the year (one at teh start of the draw-down and puuting in the plug one month earlier. Anyone else have theat recollection?
