Today's article in the Alex City Outlook about Dadeville's Sewage treatment plant's pollution of Lake Martin and more specifically Sandy Creek. With the slow flow to stagnant conditions in the lake this summer, looks like we're in for Atlanta style conditions on the Chattahoochee River. What a shame.
The real question is WHEN will the problem be fixed. Dadeville politicians sure haven't offered any information on when the repairs will be completed.
John keep us informed. With an east wind, I've seen the scum line along the bank that you talk about.

Thanks for the article OSMS. I also live in the Sandy Creek area off Cricket. The corner of my bay is filled with scum this morning and is about ten feet out. We have had this property for 17 years and I have never seen anything like this. It will be some time before any of our family or the neighbors try to swim or enjoy the water by just floating in our bay. Such a shame to see this beautiful lake come to this.

Maybe all the property owners should get together, get a lawyer, and require Dadeville to be responsible for their neglect. From the article it seems it will be politics as usual if left as it is now.

The action by the Attorney General most likely will preclude any other legal action from concerned residents. But then, I assume that was the intent.

Funny. I am not the owner of a BIG boat and I can say I have never complained about the big boats on the water, as long as the operators are respectful. So who did complain and why do we have a limit on the size boat on LM? And where are those same complainers that want to "protect our lake" on this sewage issue? I would rather deal with the big boats instead of little boats and sewage.

Why don't someone who lives in the area call their representative, or the news agencies? I called the news station last year and they drove out for an interview. I am sure that sewage would bring them out in droves... Could be big news...

I am a firm believer that the only way you can get action out of politicians is to shove a microphone and TV camera in front of their face. I think that we need to call Montomery and Birmingham stations and see if they'll come down.

You are correct the only way you are going to get any action out of the City of Dadeville, is to have the Montgomery and Birmingham news to come down and do a story.
The key to getting them there is the news has to be compelling. If you contact them I would state facts such as: MAKE SURE THEY ARE FACTS
- Violations going on for years
- Raw sewage being dumped into Lake Martin
- Alabama AG had to sue the City to get any action, City has basically ignored past violations
- Water could be hazardous to the wildlife, not sure if this is true or not but I am sure you could find out. Or better yet, the spin of the story could be Is the City of Dadeville Raw Sewage Output into Lake Martin potentially hazardous to the lake ecology and humans around Lake Martin?
- How about Dadeville Ethanol Plant can it really be built as currently Dadeville Sewage Treatment Plant cannot even handle current load requirements, etc.
Just some thoughts as if I lived in Sandy Creek or below I would be raising cane with somebody for sure, especially before the Ethanol Plant is approved. PP is correct the news coverage is the best route and then have the news coverage do follow up stories to ensure everything Dadeville said they were going to do in the initial story is done in a timely manner.

....is that I love having a place on pristine Lake Martin. Why do we compare ourselves to Lake Lanier? We are not linked via main waterway or tributary. We are also not linked to our neighbor, West Point Lake, the loser end of the Chattahooche. We are most similar to Lake Oconee in North Central Georgia, which I never hear anyone mention.

Here we go trying to use logic, but it seems if my living depended on the saleability of the lake i.e., developers, bankers, real estate industry, marinas etc that I would be keen to help out / bring pressure to bear where it is needed on the local and state level. So, don't over look natural allies in this effort?!

I would guess that the biggest polluters are the out dated cabins leach fields to close to the Lake. The EPA needs to get off their a$$ and put these violaters on notice. Some posters will not respond to this because they are in violation. Dadeville is a small speck of the problem.

Folks: I own an environmental consulting company and I can tell you from experience that unfortunatley it is sometimes cheaper for a municipality to pay fines than fix the problem, at least in the short run. I can tell you from living in Atlanta that it would take a lot to make the problem as bad as it is here (the city was paying $25K per day in fines because it was cheaper than fixing the problem). Most of the domestic sewage treatment systems are 25-30 years old and were never designed to manage the current loading (no pun intended....well, maybe a little pun was intended). Upgrading these systems is very costly and with all the administrative requirements that ADEM puts on the permitting process it will probably take a while to fix. Wish there were a silver bullet but very few communities have been at all proactive in planning for and arranging adequate funding to solve these problems. Calls and letters to the city, ADEM, the AG's office, shining the light of day in the media, etc. are what will be needed to get a fix started. But it will take time to happen.

Thanks, your statement is my exact concern...it'll take time to fix. It's amazing that this has been going on for 5 years, without any real effort to fix. Our best bet is to shine light on the issue and activate as many of the 5000 homeowners on the lake as possible to let the politicians in the state, county, and city that we will not accept the substandard treatment plant.

This has been going on much longer than five years. ADEM and the AG only go back five years when they issued the Consent Order and the Civil Action respectively.
