I received a notice from APCO that the lake would be down 2 more feet by sometimes in June. 486 to 485.8 in two days. A company of their word. I also witnessed some idiot in a white boat with red stripes dragging some kids around on a tube over some very low spots that are loaded with stumps. This event took place in Bama Park slough. Better have fun fast folks.

it looks like this will be the summer that it pays to have been out on the lake during the winter months. i live back in dead timbers and there are countless standing trees cut off at about the 481 - 484 range. saw a jetski zipping around yesterday evening all over the tops of these obstructions. one good thing that i have noticed is that the lake "seems" less crowded. might be a peaceful summer for the diehards.

Well if you read between the lines the lake will be at winter level by July unless rain comes quickly. Whats worse is the long term weather forcast is bleak! I really hate to break this news to my family. Goin to be some sad kids.....

This is terrible news for many that have invested countless $ in the lake. Whats worse is the potential for loss of vegitation all around the area.

What are the chances the lake will drop below winter pool this winter?. If they have to maintain flow and theres no rain do we still let water go?

I have seen people dragging tubes around in front of our place, and I will bet that they have never been on the lake at this level, much less at winter pool. If they had, they wouldn't be riding around off plane so close to a very large lower unit eating rock with no warning buoy marking it. It will be a hazard very soon to anyone who runs their boat with the bow in the air and the lower unit about four feet below the waterline. In fact, there are some hazards that may show up this year that I have only seen at below normal winter pool.

Based on the this year and last year, would it not make sense for APCO to seek a variance from the Corp of Engineers regarding the winter pool level. Last year the high was 488 and this year it appears it will be 486, if we do not get several tropical storms.

Does it not make sense for APCO to seek a variance as the dam produces hydro power and based on the lake level from the articles I have read state they have not been producing hydro power and instead using coal, which is a lot more expensive.

Could APCO not seek a variance for this winter draw down then based on the projected rain fall levels in the Spring adjust the lake level accordingly, if needed. As I believe the dam was originally built for flood control as well, however today I do not believe flood control is an issue with respect to Martin Dam, but I could be mistaken.

Point is does it not make sense for APCO to have as much water as possible in Martin during its peak electrical needs and therefore seek a variance for the winter draw down level based on the past 2 years.

Yes I know if it continues to drop we will be at winter pool befroe we know it, but I am sure we will get some rain this summer and the lake will rise here an there, but never to 488 or so in my opinion.

So should we be emailing APCO inquiring about a variance for the winter draw down and see if they have sought such, as it makes sense to me?

I am not informed on that but logic would dicate that if we continue to not receive rain then they will continue to pull from the lake.

This situation is really serious. I have never seen this area this devoid of rain ever and I have been in the area 20 years.

Have the lake ever dropped lower than 480 for a long time??

The original draw down for this lake was planned at 50ft. It remained at 30ft until into the 60's. The large draw down was one of the reasons the entire lake bed was clear cut before filling the impound. APCO later tieid leaving standing timber in it's impounds with horrible results (Henry Neely). So the answer is yes, many have seen lower than 480, and I have a feeling that many more will this year.

that it would be a waste of time for them to petition the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a variance to increase winter pool levels because of the severe drought conditions this spring. In response to a question posed to him during a roundtable session Jim Crew, Alabama Power Company's Manager for Lake Martin Relicensing, made that statement to all attendees. He said that at the State of the Watershed conference at Camp ASCCA a few weeks ago.

All of you have an opportunity to address him and his comments and other Southern Company executives tomorrow. The Relicensing meeting begins at 9:00 AM in the Betty Carol Graham Technology Center on the Alex City campus of the Central Alabama Community College.

Funny why it is a waste of time to petition for a change for Lake Martin but it was not a waste of time to petition for Logan Martin and Smith Lake this past winter. They even got permission to start raising Lake Harris, above us on the Tallapoosa, almost three weeks before their April 1 fill date. But this has all been hashed out before and it does not solve the problem. At least we can save on the $3+ gas this summer.

that meeting is 5/24 in Alex City. Is this open to the public and public questioning? Is the meeting highly structured with questions submitted in advance, etc?

If either of you or anyone else for that matter is able to attend the APCO meeting it would be great if your could post motesfrom the meeting on the forum, as I am sure there are numerous whom will not be able to attend.

My understanding OSMS is the meeting are open to the general public.

I spent 15K on boat lifts this year and pretty sure I will be unable to use it the entire summer. Now my Seaport pad is stitting dangerously low in water and looks like I will have to pull my PWC out of the water very soon.

I've been coming to lake for several decades...worst situation I've ever seen for lake level.

The meeting is tomorrow, May 24. It is not a highly structured affair. There are a couple of general assemblys and some breakout sessions. It is very likely that Alabama Power Company will use tomorrow to begin staffing the various committees with those members of the public who are interested in providing input to the relicensing process. The meeting is planned for 9 - 3 and lunch is provided at no charge to attendees.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has been known to have a representative attend the meetings.
