Just for a time, I would like to sidestep the problems ongoing at this moment. I would like everyone to join me in the following thoughts and prayers. Memorial day is for paying tribute to our military from the very beginning of our great country. For the hundreds of thousands that have given the ultimate and for those that are serving so gallantly to this day, please take the time to say a prayer and be thankful for the sacrifices made by so many. True, it is a time for joy and relaxing with friends and family. No one will deny that. I only ask if you will, stop for a prayer. Kingfish

Nicely put Kingfish...

Please also add a prayer for those men and women who are currently serving overseas... wether you agree or disagree with the war, they still are protecting your liberties, pray for them daily.

Thank you Kingfish for the reminder of what this holiday weekend is all about. I cannot be there this weekend to enjoy all the blessings, but will stop and remember to be thankful for all of those that sacrifice so we can have the freedom to make choices. Happy Memorial Day!

Kingfish. My husband and I were talking about this the other night and I told him I bet if I asked the two young people in my office (ages 20 and 22) what Memorial Day signified, they would recognize it only as a day off work, with pay. I remember when I was a little girl during WWII (and some on this Form are at least as old as I am), we had a fabric "flag" that we put in the window. It was dark blue, as I recall, and had a star on it. It signified that my father (or any family member) was serving in active duty with the military.

While I don't believe anyone could be unaware of the various conflicts our military is currently involved in, I wonder if the population's sensitivity to it might be hightened considerably if there was a physical, visible indication of how wide-ranging our country's involvement is, and the toll on its citizens who are without one or more family members. I have no idea how many "stars in the windows" I would see in my neighborhood alone, or in businesses where the owner or employee(s) might be over seas.

I realize there are widely divergent opinions on this Form about Iraq and other conflicts (I don't believe it was ever actually declared as a 'war,' much like Korea and Viet Nam), but I cannot believe that there is even one person in this country who doesn't wholeheartedly support every service man and woman member of the military. It is for them that I wish their family members could display some outward sign of the sacrifice they too are making.

Just a thought for this Memorial Day...

Good thoughts Kingfish! My prayers are always with our service men/women.

Also everyone please be safe on the lake this weekend. There will be many unexperienced boaters out so lets all keep our wits about us and pray for an incident free holiday!

You'd be surprised by some of the "young people". The 20-somethings are the main ones serving right now.
"Those who have fought these battles and served this cause can be proud of all they have
achieved. And these veterans of battle will carry with them for all their days the memory of the
ones who did not live to be called veterans. They will remember young soldiers like Captain
Joshua Byers, a West Point man born in South Carolina who died in Iraq. When this son of
missionaries was given command of a 120-man combat unit, he wrote this to his parents: "I
will give the men everything I have to give. I love them already, just because they're mine. I
pray, with all my heart, that I will be able to take every single one of them home safe when we
finish our mission here." "
I'm by no means getting on a soap box, I just get disheartened when people assume that the younger generations have nothing to offer. I myself ran for political office here in Shelby County during the last election, after the public appearances and interviews a great number of people apologized for ever thinking negatively just because of my age.

I am absolutey positive that Harborcon meant no harm with her comments. Let us, please don't get in a controversy over who is right or who is wrong. I am also a veteran and I agree with Harborcon and I also agree with you. There are many, many young people that are losing their life right now, today. That WAS NOT her point. Please, don't get upset. All military are in our thoughts now. God bless, Kingfish

and you are right. I didn't in any way mean to suggest that my two young office friends have nothing to offer; only that many young people not serving, and who personally know no one serving, might not feel the same angst for those in harm's way, no matter their age. When the draft was in effect, every male over 18 was aware of the possibility that he might be sent to fight for our country. I was just suggesting that everyone's realization of the impact of any war might be heightened if those WWII flags were reinstated.

You know, I have often said that the written word leaves much to be desired...without voice inflection and/or facial expression, words are so easily misconstrued.

Again, a reflective, happy and safe Memorial Day to all - I have 1 hour and 24 minutes left before I can bail from my desk and be on the road TO THE LAKE!

I agree with you on the younger generation. Lord knows there are some bad ones, but there are many great ones.

For all the 'ole veterans', this is the first war fought in recent history with all volunteers. I'd much rather go to war with these guys than the draftees I served with.

Thanks for the post Kingfish.

I agree that some of the "younger generation" do not understand the significance of the holiday, but there are those who completely understand the meaning and purpose of this honoring day. Myself, a "new generation" (in my early 30s) KID, I hope that I understand the sacrifices that the men and women before me and the ones that are currently defending our freedom have made in order to establish this great country. Prayers with all of those who have sacrificed everything in the past, present, and in the future.
