at Chimney Rock.......is that a controlled burn?

Thought about asking the same question, but don't see how anyone would do a controlled burn when we are in the middle of a drought. Plus the whole island was on fire and I did not see anyone monitoring it besides those of us who were just there to watch.

I was on the back side of chimney rock on Sunday at Ridge. It looked like a huge fire. I can't see how it could be extinguished, how do you get water to it? I guess the bridge at the Ridge runs to the back side of that right?

The bridge does run to the backside but no roads seem to exist on the island. Seems the fire took out a lot of old dead trees, they were crashing into the lake. Amazing to watch at a far distance.

Did the fire start Saturday afternoon? We swam at the rock Saturday around noon.

Heard this morning that is was caused by a careless camper early Sunday morning.

I really hate that. We were down there yesterday afternoon and there were still flames, even high up in the trees. With it this dry, is there any talk of not doing the fireworks?

I just really doubt they will have the fireworks this year. I can'y get my boat out so I could not go even if they did. I suspect hundreds of boats are stranded this year. But the drought conditions should be of such concern that they may be prohibited from having the show.

Fireworks are banned in 33 counties UNLESS they are being shot over water. So maybe we'll have a semi-normal 4th.

Is there enough water in Lake Martin to qualify as being shot "over water"?

The Windermere Fire Dept did respond to the fire.

At the site it was determined that the floating pumps were not adequate to fight a fire of this magnitude and there was no method to bring fire trucks to the site.

Since the fire could not be brought under control, personnel safety was the prime concern and the site was left to burn.

Thanks for the update....that response is definitely understood, based on what was at stake...no houses, just trees.

if it truly was started by a camper that makes me mad. when i was in college i spent many a weekend camping on this lake. this year camping should be banned!!! an island burned over in the Pleasure Point area a few weeks back. having campfires is UNSAFE in these dry conditions!

why didn't they just build the fire on the bank where the water should be. well i guess this was good for the island to get rid of some of the undergrowth.
