Now that I have recovered from Cat's post, what do we need to do about the dogs? Everyone that posted said to shoot the dogs. I know that I can't do it and I know Lakefun can't do it. Heck, he had a bead on the brown and white dog a month or so ago and couldn't pull the trigger. No fault of his, I know how he felt. Do you think we should advertise for a hit on a marked dog or should we just do what Cat suggested and poison them? No, I think a hit would be more humane. I can't believe I am talking about killing a animal, but they have got to go. I hope PETA is not reading this or Pamela Anderson may show up at our front door. Rhonda

me butting in with a suggestion. I realize I am not involved other than my love for animals. It also means I love your pets and don't want to see them harmed by a stray.

Please visit or call your local humane shelter and ask them for advice. I have heard of places that would loan out various size have-a-heart type traps. They may also be able to recommend a local service that assist with the capture of animals.

If it attack then yes, shoot it. Otherwise, please pursue a humane approach. It is not the animal's fault - it is the fault of certain ignorant and sorry a$$ed humans..

You are more than welcome to tell me to kiss off if you so desire.

I do not mind at all. I hope there is a humane way to handle this problem. I will investigate this trap thing. I would LOVE to do this without harming the dog. Only thing that I am worried about is that we remove him/her from here and him/her gets put into another neighborhood that has pets and childred.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. It is obvious I can not shot this animal. I have had several prime opprotunities to shot it. This animal really needs to be delt with before it causes anymore harm. Tomorrow, we will investigate your suggestion. Sincerely, Lakefun

If there is a problem with dogs, we could just send Michael Vick over from Atlanta.

I told a neighbor after his dog attacked mine that was under my control "If he comes in my yard he's my dog so keep him up or keep him away". I wouldn't go shooting dogs on other people's property. Be sure to call the police and get it on record. Get your neighbors to call and complain too. It would be helpful to get the owner's name through a tag if you can. Then the police have someone to talk to. They hate this stuff too.

THIS IS A POLITICAL PROBLEM JUST LIKE THE SEWER ISSUE

Tallapoosa County desparately needs a leash law. It's just a matter of time before this story is told about some child getting hurt or killed. Why can't an ordinance be passed? Our police have been told we can't afford an animal control operation.

That's just baloney. At a minimum you could fine people for letting their dogs run loose like that. Those of you that can vote should be talking to your county commissioner. Especially around election time.

The 3-4 dogs in question are homeless. I called the animal shelter, the sheriffs office twice, the health dept., and the environmental dept. in Alex City ( go figure ). The sheriffs office told me they could do nothing untill someone was bitten. One thing we could do is show up at the next commissoners meeting in force.

Tallapoosa county does not need any more laws it can not enforce. The law enforcements officers of this county are spread thin as it is. Do you want them catching dogs not on a leash or people stealing water craft?

That's the kind of thinking that stops progress in the county. Why is it wrong to ask the representatives to come up with creative ideas to solve problems in the county?

Do we let wild dogs just run around and kill children? Wake up and smell the coffee. The county is growing and the government must adapt to the population's needs. Isn't that's what we pay taxes for?

Yep! We never question why does the depudies, or county workers get to drive back and forth to work in tax payer vehicles. All speeders are not caught nor are all felons apprehended but just ask for some help to corral some homeless dogs.

I am working on something that I think will make everyone happy. So, just take a deep breath, sit back and relax. I promise it will be the most humane thing that we can do. It does not involve guns or poison. Oh heck, Jay Leno was just talking about PETA. My plan, may keep Pamela Anderson from knocking on our front door. Rhonda

Hey let me help if you need me. I haven't seen the Trussells for several days. Maybe our mini meeting and her shouting melee has created some good. She said that 2 of the 5 cats she keeps in the house died.

Wow, another multi ID. Bruce help. It's not a matter of handling the dog problem. We are trying to handle it within the law and humanely. If you have any suggestions or influence we will be glad to meet with you. Today at 4 o'clock would be good. Harbocon can you help?

I recall that a few years ago the City of Dadeville contracted with someone to round up all the stray dogs within the city limits. When pressed for a response as to what they were going to do with the dogs, they responded that they were taking them to the Lee County Humane Shelter--whereupon, the Lee shelter said no way...they would not take them. The city scrapped the idea shortly thereafter. Actually, I doubt that these guys ever intended to take them to a shelter...sounded more like "target practice with pay".

responding - didn't check the Forum from Friday afternoon until just now. I'll be glad to help. I like the idea of the safe-trap, but wonder how one would be able to get the trap, full of 100 pounds of snarling dog, into a vehicle for transport to whever it needed to be transported.

So far as checking the tag on the collar (assuming there's a collar), if these dogs are vicious enough to attack and kill, I'm not real excited about getting close enough to read the tag with my tri-focals!

I can make phone calls, write letters, do research, etc.; and when I am at the lake, I can run at the varmits, yell, and wave my arms in a threatening manner. Just let me know what needs doing. I take direction well.

Am very interested in hearing Babygirl's plan as well...

Lakeman/Babygirl -

I know for many it would be very heartwrenching to shoot a dog - I have found it to be difficult myself, when I have decided to put an end to a dog problem. However, if you find yourself in a position that you believe you have exhausted all legal options and obviously you want to kill the dog quickly - I would recommend that when you visually see the dog - put a bowl of wet dog-food out and let the dog(s) begin eating. That way you will have chosen your spot (best/safest shot) to perform the deed . I know there are many will that joke about this being their last meal - but, that is not the intent and it is not a joke to have to deal with that kind of problem. The intent of the food is to get the dog in a position that when you take the shot - you can put the dog on the ground with little or no suffering. I would recommend that if it comes to the point of you having to shoot the dog - don't use a 22 or a handgun, more than likely it will not be a clean kill, instead opt for a scoped deer rifle - and be very careful of what is behind the dog, since more than likely the bullet will pass through the dog and be very lethal to whatever it comes in contact with.

I would ABSOLUTLEY recommend that you DO NOT attempt to poison the dogs - that will get you a world of trouble - particularly if you can imaging accidently killing someone else's pet or a wild animal that is protected.

I hate you guys are having to deal with this type of problem - but, unfortunately we have had to deal with the same type of issues at some of the hunting clubs that I have been a member.

Best of luck -
