..the Bald Eagle is coming off the endangered species list today. Numbers have almost tripled since the ban of DDT which caused softening of the eggshells.

>>numbers have tripled since.....<< ....faulty math here....the numbers have actually increased twenty-fold....from a little over 400 breeding pair in 1967 to over 10,000 currently in U.S mainland........

I wonder how they counted the breeding pairs. Count their feet and divide by four?

This could be a risky way of counting. What do you conclude if the total number of feet is NOT divisible by 4? Remainder of 2? or worse yet a remainder of 3? :)

LOL. Now remember, we are counting breeding pairs. I could only conclude that due to some deformity some bird/birds had more than two feet or , heaven forbid, some bird got left out because there weren't enough of each gender to go around. In my neck of the woods there would have been one heck of a fight.

Here is another thought. I understand that it is against the law to shoot them. While being on the " endangered species list ", does it mean it is " double " against the law to shoot them? It would seem that to be on a full time protected list would be more sensible. Like buzzards and crows.

...or maybe that DDT did more than soften eggshells!....I agree that it would better to leave them on the endangered list....some might consider anything not on the list to be fair game...horrendous thought....
