I have an old well that has a cover on it but I still worry about safety. I would like to fill it in and landscape over it. Is there a certain process?
I do not know if I should fill with rock (still water down there) and then cover with topsoil or something different. ....or maybe a company that does this. Any advice out there?

I don't know about filling the well, but whenever you have to replace your septic system, the powers that be will not approve it until you take care of that well...

Pump the water from the well into the lake. Wait all home owners on the lake dig a well and do the same..

I did some research on this a couple years ago, after tearing down and hauling off the concrete block shed built around the well. To summarize, you're supposed to return the well to its "original state" which apparently means filling it with similar soil at a consistent level of compaction as the surrounding ground.

Yeah, right.

In hindsight, I really, really wish I'd had the presence of mind to toss the blocks down the well as demolishing. Would have been easier and faster than getting them offsite, and would have likely filled the well completely. Then all I would have needed was a fair bit of topsoil tossed in on the last 5-10' of the fill as it went in for a safe and undetectable hole.

Obviously any fill you use would need to be relatively non-degradable. I'm actually eyeing my neighbors well house as fill now.........

There is nothing like a manufactured "lid" out there. I'm guessing nobody wants the liability. You could probably make one, and I've considered it, but load capacity and anchoring are the biggest hurdle. In other words, tossing a sheet of 3/8" plywood out isn't the right answer.

I found one at 80 ft deep. APCO filled it in with water (and now a couple feet of silt)....

I am trying but with attacks still coming form lakeman it ain't likely to happen. I still have more ammunition. In fact I think I will use a little of it now.

The woman who told us we had to fill our well before we could replace our septic system said we could use old concrete blocks, clay pipe from the old system, rocks, etc.; just about anything that wasn't biodegradable. She said nothing about topfil, though...Guess that would have come up after we did everything else and were ready to replace. Then she could have pulled the plug while we arranged for topfill!
