I was just looking at a map of the Tallapoosa River and realized that there are no dams in Ga. on the river. The first dam is Harris, an APCO dam in Ala. I seems that Ga. can not stop any water coming to lake Martin. Am I wrong?

You are correct. The dams in the news with the Governor, all feed into the Coosa system.

Thanks, Osms. I have been sitting here fat, dumb and happy thinking we were going to get some relief. Looks like rain is the only thing that will help us. This is my first time on the forum.

Both the Tallapoosa and Coosa Rivers feed the Alabama River and Lake Martin is required daily to send downstream a certain amount of water fro navigation and endangered aquatic life.
This is one reason why the lake has been dropping like a rock. The other of course is the drought.
Now with that said Alabama Power (APCo) had sought relief from the Lake Martin downstream requirements back on May 15th.
Since the Governor intervened and Allatoona is required to release additional water into the Coosa, APCo has been able to cut back on the downstream requirements associated with Lake Martin. Therefore per Alabama Power they hope to hold Martin at its current level.

Maverick, for some reason I can not get thru to the webpage www.lakemartin.org/membership.asp. I tried on each place on this webpage I saw a place for HOBO. I will try again tomorrow. Maybe have better luck.

The last Two days as i past over the tallapoosa in wetumpka it has been very very low. So maybe they arent letting very much out of martin dam

There are no dams on the Tallapoosa in Georgia-yet. Georgia has wanted to build a dam on their part of the river for years. In fact, isn't that one of the things that triggered the water wars?

Yes, Georgia originally wanted to build a 4,000 acre reservoir just across the Georgia line on the upper part of the Tallapoosa. It seemed to be crazy idea as if you have ever seen the Tallapoosa in that part of Georgia you can just about jump across most of it and the watershed is very small. It was the start of the "water wars" when Alabama filed suit to stop construction of the dam. I personally thought it was a diversionary tactic by Georgia to focus attention away from the Coosa system which is where Georgia really needs the water. I also think that the "water war" (ACT system) between Alabama and Georgia was almost settled a few years back but the original lawsuit was tied into a settlement of the Chattahoochee/Flint /Apalachicola lawsuit as well and thus could not be settled seperatelyfor some reason. I think the proposed settlement then did not include the original proposed Tallapoosa dam. Others may have more information on this.

Nope it was for real. Tom Murphy wanted it built and named after him. He was the driving force behind that one.
He was a crafty and powerful speaker of the GA House for many years. He represented Harralson county and I wonder if he owned land that would have become shoreline. I don't know that as a fact but it would be consistent with what I have read about him.
