How many of you have been unable to retrieve your anchors at Lake Martin? I've recently had difficulty retrieving a Danforth style anchor on two occasions and have had to leave one. Just curious if anyone has experience retrieving fouled anchors.

I have problems every time in front of Chimney Rock, the depth is about 80+ feet
I have found that if I tie the anchor rope to a cleat and use the motor pull in different directions to free up the the anchor, it will eventually give free

Don't give up so easy
By the time you purchase 100 ft of rope, a rubber coated chain and the anchor - you are talking about $ 75 bucks

The aliens collect them and use them at the base they have built between Goat Island and the dam. Since they use anti-gravity technology it takes a LOT to keep it anchored down. Next time an anchor doesn't want to come up, just cut the rope and let it go. You can't win a tug-of-war with the aliens. Your only chance is if they get distracted or get called back to the 'mother ship' while you are trying to retrieve your anchor.

I had one hang up at the rock... 1,450HP pulling against it and what popped up from the deep???? A one eyed alien. Scared everyone on the boat... Please, cut the rope and let them have it.

do you know how to retreive a hung anchor? I'm not being smart but a lot of people don't.

Danforths are tough if they get hung up, but most times it's because the boater gets impatient.

Those one eyed aliens are the most dangerous of all. I am glad you and the family got away. That could have been a disaster. But on the other hand, have you seen what they will bring on E-bay. One alien and your retirement is secure. Next time you go to the rock make sure you have a spear gun with a titanium shaft and tip. That is the only thing that will stop them!!

My father had a boat down in Orange Beach and we never had any issues with retrieving and danforth anchor. It's much easier in saltwater because most times it is a sandy bottom. We would always idle up on the anchor and actually run over the anchor line to where it was on the centerline of the boat and angled back under the boat. We would pull all the slack out of the line as we moved forward and then tie the line off on the bow cleat and the anchor would just pop right out. I did it the same way on Lake Lanier with my center console and never lost an anchor. Are you using at least six foot of anchor chain? In 20 years of boating I have not even come close to losing an anchor.

By the way, the URL said that you should have all the people move to the front, tie the anchor off, and then move to the back to "pop" the anchor out. That is about one of the dumbest things I ever read. Could you image sitting at the Rock and having everybody keep moving from bow to stern and back again to try and get the anchor out. You would like a bunch of idiots.

Lost mine at the Rock as well. I pulled gently with the boat in all directions but was afraid I might pull a cleat out. Gave up after 20 minutes and bought another on ebay.

Get a good GPS reading directly over the anchor, cut the line and then post on here. With any luck someone (who dives) may offer you yours back at a discounted rate ;-) Thats the best chance of seeing it again.

Earlier this season (or late last season? They are running together) I pulled a steel bed frame (think it was a toddlers bed?) up with my anchor. I have seen the many trees (very large at that) in the cove of "the rock" and I promise you that they will win a pulling contest.

Or get on your VHF radio and ask if any divers are within range and pay somone to go down your rope (much easier to locate if you haven't yet cut your line and you are guarenteed success!)...

Try... letting the line go a little slack. Point your bow toward the anchor. Slowly Ease your boat to the anchor as you pull the line in and when you are just a little past it in the opposite direction of the "set" pull hard.

If that doesn't work after a couple of times at slightly different angles then let the line out and slowly go in circles around the anchor snag keeping tension on the line. If that doesn't do it then cut the line.

If a Danforth gets really hung under rocks or a stump you can't do anything.

Or you can get the scantily clad females to jump up and down on the rear of the boat until one goes over..

Correction, that would be MY deck brush, but PP was sweet enough to go and get it for me. :0)
