The next organized lake-wide cleanup of Lake Martin is planned for the 7th of June 2008. On the 64th anniversary of D-Day we will make an assault on the beaches begining at 0800 hours. Litter, rather than kraut, will be captured by the volunteer army.

Initial planning is being done by the Middle Tallapoosa Clean Water Partnership and representatives of the Alabama Power Company. It's part of their Renew Our Rivers campaign.

HOBO's and all others, get ready to make your battle plans and prepare your troops.

Why not an organized clean up now while we are experiencing these historically low levels? There is a LOT of trash exposed now that may never be exposed again. I understand it could be difficult to do on short notice, but even a limited turnout would be better than no attempt at all.

Probably should have mentioned that the June date is one of only two open dates in the Renew Our Rivers campaign that begins in March.

The Middle Tallapoosa Clean Water Partnership's lake cleanup committee decided that if they waited until boating season (if there is one next year) the cleanup would be more successful. They've experienced some difficulties during past cleanups because an insufficient numer of boats were available to take volunteers to the islands that needed a lot of attention.

They also did not want to wait until the July through August timeframe to do it because the shoreline needs a good cleaning already and because the temperatures would be considerably higher during those months.

They encourage all lake property owners as well as others to do what they can between now and June 7 to pick-up litter on the shoreline. If large items such as sunken boats, tires, and appliances are found please note the GPS location of those items so that the Renew Our Rivers barge can be used to winch them to the deck for proper disposal. That Alabama Power Company barge won't be available for use on Lake Martin until June 7.

I will buy all that. It would still be nice to see some organized efforts while the water is so low. From what I have seen there is plenty that could be done just around the ramps. Stuff could be dragged back ot the ramps if trucks or dumpsters were available to handle it from that point. I am sure that all around the lake folks are cleaning up in their own sloughs and such. The weather is about to turn and the wate is coming back soon also. It seems a waste to not do something.
