The Lake Martin Home Owners and Boat Owners (HOBOs) Association, Inc. in association with the Alabama Bass Federation, Alabama Power Company and Advanced Disposal are pleased to announce the 1st Annual Lake Martin HOBOs Christmas Tree Recycling program.

Each artificial reef will be comprised of 25 trees, with 5 trees placed upright, and 20 trees on the lakebed. The trees will be anchored approximately 4 feet below the current winter pool level and away from homeowner’s docks and boat ramps. We are hoping this year to establish over 20+ reefs spread over the lake from River North to Parker Creek.

Trees may be dropped off at the Lake Martin HOBO recycling dumpsters located in Alexander City in front of Winn Dixie, in Dadeville at Piggly Wiggly and across the street from the Union Volunteer Fire and Rescue Headquarters on Highway 50 from December 26th until January 3rd. Before disposing of your live Christmas tree, please remember to remove all decorations, including hooks, wire, tinsel, and ornaments as well as wood and metal tree stands.

By recycling your Christmas tree it becomes environmentally friendly, thereby benefiting the lake’s ecosystem through the creation of artificial fish reefs, rather than filling our landfills. These artificial reefs are important to a lakes ecosystem as they provide an area for the bottom of the food chain to develop. The algae and plankton that develop on the reefs are a source of food for baitfish and game fish. Also, many fish are attracted to the reefs as they provide an area for spawning and protective cover.

Nice, what a great way to get support of the HOBOs by fishermen. Create fish habitat and post the location to only those involved. People never cease to amaze me!!!!!

I'm assuming you were being critical............and if so, just remember that you can't make chicken salad out of anything but chicken. Meaning, who do you think gets these things done except volunteers...........and if only a few HOBOS show up to help that alone will be amost 2000 people to get the GPS coordinates.............and I'd be surprised if the fishermen/fisherwomen who will show and volunteer would be against limiting the GPS info to those that help in one way or another. If you were blasting away tongue in cheek...........then I'll blame my retort on the cheap red wine I sometimes guzzle. :~}

Thank you for your offer to volunteer to assist in this new HOBO endeavour.

I will forward your email address to the HOBO volunteer coordinator for this project.

As I am just the front man - LOL.

Thanks again, sure we will be in touch. Ought to be a good time for all who participate to make new friends while benefiting Lake Martin at the same time. What more could you ask for, seriously.

Mav-

I am pretty sure I can help those days, but our boat is high and dry right now (like many others).

Will there be folks with boats that need help on them? If so then please sign me up to help 1/2 or 1/3 on the Kowaliga side, or wherever needed.

As to the publishing / non-publishing of coordinates, I guess it's kind of like the reefs on the gulf. If the gov't funds and places them, then they release all of the numbers to the public for "free."

When private fishermen / fishing clubs go to the expense and trouble of making their own reefs. they're private. Ever had any luck getting the numbers of any private reefs?

APC will bring in their barge to help us in Jan or Feb once we determine the magnitude of the project (number of tree collected).

If the program is a HUGE success we may have to establish the reefs over the course of several weekends based on the barges availability.

John will let you know who, what when where and how once the dates are set. I will email your email address to the volunteer coordinator for the project.

Thank you very much for volunteering very much appreciated.

that are donated to hobo and build their own habitat at their home?

If so when and where can the trees be picked-up?

This effort is by volunteers and companies to help provide a service for all members. If we had an unlimited supply of trees we would consider such a program; however, used Christmas trees have become hard to find, because so many people use artificial trees. We're trying to contact stores with leftovers as well as used trees donated by indivijuals.

BTW, if anyone gets ideas of theft from the collection points, we are asking the Police Departments to keep an eye on the dumpsters. It's Christmas, GIVE don't take.

Hey Mav,

Now all we need is a donation of some of those Green Monster lights - could really dress those reefs up!

I don't fish, so I've always wondered how creating spots where you know they are makes the sport more fun. It's like the guy who builds a 4 acre pond and stocks it so he catch what he put in there. What concerns me though is the shortsightedness of our newly anointed leaders. We don't need more fishers, and we surely don't need more boats on this lake. I already have plenty of folks sitting in front of my house dumping fuel and beer cans in the landfill that used to be my waterfront. How about a little forward thinking? I'm sure your children would rather have water to drink than a fishing hole on a dump. Wouldn't it be prudent to wait and see how much water we actually have before we sink more trash in the lake? The trees may be ecologically sound, but the boats they will attract are another matter.

I think that part of a sound lake ecology is a healthy fish population. The proposed reef project helps provide habitat to facilitate just that. Don't know if boat trafic will increase as a result, but I rather doubt it.

Ecstasypoint I agree with your concern to a point. Your additional boats will come from " condos " and not fish habitats. As the area fills with more houses and occupants then you will have new boats and less lake structure because the first thing " most " people do is burn the existing structure so it will be pretty as they apply pesticides and fertilizer to their lawns and it is dumped into the lake and kills the fish and lake life and then our kids swim in it and years later they wonder why they have cancer and other ailments even though they don't smoke and have eaten healthy foods all their lives.

Fish habitats not only help the fish but also helps clean the water our kids can play in and drink. The fishermen you see treat the water better than the weekend warriors that roam the lake drinking and urinating in the lake, the PWC charging your pier and making wakes that bounce your boats and destroy the seawall. Not all fishermen are considerate but I can guarentee that a lake habitant will treat your property with respect. The fish habitat program is a long range plan to better the lake and help offset some of the damage increased population is causing.

Why would someone spend thousands of dollars to build a place to " get away from it all " and then bring it all with them.

Look forward, protect our natural resources.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, Lakeman. Useful to know your take on the long range possibilities of the habitats. Does anyone have any ideas regarding the other issues? Is there anything at all we can do to slow or curtail the population, pesticides, pwc destruction, and garbage that seems will inevitably damage the quality of the lake? Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the fact that the hobos are volunteering to try to help the lake. I just think we need a more global approach with a more far-ranging view of current realities and future projections. More specifically, we need to focus less on the water's entertainment value and start getting serious about our responsibility to protect the life-sustaining capabilities of the resource. If you think more fish (and more fishers) will do that, I'm all for it. I also think if we could set some firm rules for those weekend warriors, more people would be willing to help clean up the damage that has already been done.

Amen! You are right on target. I really believe that although the HOBOs probably don't satisfy all needs that together we can undo the damage that has already been done and have something worthwhile to pass on to future generations. Thanks Ecstasypoint for your concern.

My son who is 16 needs a few additional community service hours for school and said he would love to help out if you need him. His cell is 205-601-5153 and we will be at the lake on the 26th for a week. He is trying to collect trees in our community and bring them down.

Your post is TYPICAL of all you 'johnny come lately's" as to be laughable. The lake was here for DECADES before you knew it existed but now that you have inherited some money and bought a place, ALL FUTURE BUILDING SHOULD CEASE A DECIST! But I am just upset because because you have finally figured out our plan. All of us oldtimers have been trying to destroy the lake for years. The C-mas tree habitats was a MAJOR part of that plan. As for those 'firm rules' you want to put in place for the weekend warriors...... all I can do is shake my head in disgust at that one. We have them, they are called LAWS. And BTW--they apply to you too, even if you happen to own property on the lake. In fact, I would bet that you fall into the catagory (weekend warrior) yourself, because it refers to folks that only come around on weekends and think the lake is here FOR THEIR PLEASURE. Here's a clue, IT DON'T. The recreation aspect falls WAY down on the list of priorities

Are you sure you don't live on lay lake? I love waking up and seeing people out enjoying their lives and I'm glad that I wake up to enjoy mine. I guess it's how you look at everything in life.Is your glass half empty or half full ?

Some folks just don't get it FWBG. I have spent five decades on this lake, but the last one has really blown what little mind I have. I welcome ANYONE that is able to realize their dream of 'being on the lake', no matter what form they choose to do so. Some invested in boats that they can 'weekend' on, others camp at Wind Creek, others on islands, and of course the very fortunate few who actually get to live here. Any and all are welcome to me. I know weekenders who treat the lake with more respect than property owners I know.

But what gripes me MOST of all, is the ones that start screaming for less development and fewer boats, now that they have theirs!! But I guess my big issue now is folks whining about pesticides. I know that there are a few who post here on that subject that, well lets just say, 'practice what they preach'. But most are environmentalist whacko's that live in some of the largest developments with the most manicured landscapes that require the most 'pesticides' they rant about.

No ltl not everyone is guilty but I would welcome anyone who is affended by someone who is against pesticides to marinate their fish in pesticide at their next fish fry and then post how good the fish taste and make their kids eat a double portion.

Not all the weeken warriors are bad either and when you said they actually treat the lake better than some property owners you know I could only surmise that you were talking about yourself. I am happy that it was me ( go figure ) that posted on what is now your " BIG ISSUE ". And you were doing so well, but as previously stated, " it had to be said".

ltl, I wish you and yours a merry Christmas and a happy New Year and peace on our beautiful lake. Just like our servicemen and women who fight to keep us free and give those who are against them the right to speak against them, we valliant few will fight to keep our paradise a paradise even though you many are against us.

Peace on earth and good will to all inhabitants.

I didn't say all were guilty. In fact I said just the opposite. Take your lame attempts to start a fight somewhere else, you see, there are too many others that have grown to see you for what you are, a troublemaker and bully. And why would you say I have a new cause. My only fight is and always has been against STUPIDITY. I guess that is why you always seem to be on my opposing team.

PS...connect the dots and you will that I didn't even repond to you.
