There just are not any places on the water that serve breakfast and thats bad. Before Sinclairs was developed , the old store and Cecil's on the Lake was still going, you could get breakfast at the deli/store.

There are many many people on the central part around Kowaliga that would support Sinclair's if they would just open for breakfast on the weekends. If a group wants to have breakfast after church on Sunday, we have to drive to Alexander City and hope we can get a table at Huddle House.

Sure wish we had another restaurant around junction of Red Hill Road and 63, or at Kowaliga, or just north of Kowaliga.

Oh well-maybe someday.

The restaurant on the hill by River North has shut down as well. I am curious about the Elks lodge. I saw that they are looking for a great #in their membership drive. My husband always went to the Elks club with his family as a child and had many good meals there. Does the Elks Club in Alexander City have a good restaurant and is it active? We would consider becoming a member for the benefit of the restaurant as well as volume would help support the efforts of the Elks Club. It is hard to participate in all events when you are not a full time resident of the lake area chapter.

Out on an early Sea-Doo ride in the cool spring a couple years ago and realized the perfect thing would be a big ol' cup of coffee. No chance....

Maybe Starbucks needs to come to Tallapoosa county....

My spouse would love to hear there was a Starbucks close to the Lake.

I don't think there is a chance for the Starbucks franchise to support (allow) one.

How many cups of java of any sort would it take to turn a profit even at three to five bucks a cup? How many cups would they sell even in Alex City? LOL

I would recommend the purchase of a Rancillo Silvia Expresso Maker. Even then, it will take a lot of cups of expresso to recoup your cost.

Good eating places is one thing that is desperately lacking around the lake. I mean c'mon with all the traffic of locals and vacationers that are there, whats the deal?? When I visit my lake house sometimes we miss modern type cooking and restaraunts. Its like stepping back in time when we're down there.. Love the lake though!

I agree with your post as I am sure most do.

I have not seen a post from him lately, but a Gentleman who used to own/operate (don't know his current status) Anchor Bay Marina used to post on the Forum with lots of good information.

He once gave the Forum Members insight as to challenges of having an eating establishment on the Lake. You may want to do a Forum Search under his handle "AnchorbayDon".

I personally thought it was an eye-opener. I seem to recall one of his major points was not only is it a seasonal clientel but also primarily only a weekend (mainly Saturday) clientel during the season. It was a significant management and economical challenge with finding staff and running a business with such limited visits by customers.

As we all know, last season was a disaster for all the retailers around the Lake (well maybe not for the storage folks). :Lets hope for a better year for all of us.

and I also believe the selection around the lake is quite good given the full time population of the area; the places I go are rarely overcrowded, so that should say something about why there isn't more availability. If and when the economy can support growth, it will, but I like things just the way they are....... I even like cooking my own omelet and brewing my own coffee to enjoy at home with a nice quiet view of our beautiful lake.

There used to be a place near Lake Lanier that depended on the seasonal trade. They were open Fri & Sat for dinner and was called The Dinner Deck.

Man! For $9.75 you got all you can eat starting with boiled shrimp, then fried shrimp, fried chicken, fried filet or whole catfish, hushpuppies (with onion), slaw, fries and for the sissies broiled catfish filets. I can't remember what else. Oh yes, a sherbert to clear the grease when you walked out the door.

When you came in you paid, sat down and told your waitress exactly what you wanted. If you wanted more you could ask for 3 chicken legs, two whole catfish and 4 hushpuppies or what ever you wanted. It always came hot.

They used to serve 1500 people a night and made a killing. Sold out and retired.

You are exactly right. We are very fortunate to have pretty good restaurants for a base population of what... ~45,000? This ain't Atlanta but hey! This ain't Atlanta.

Sounds like a mass of humaninty in total bliss or a feeding frenzy.

I got to agree with jlazc and ask is this really what we want for Lake Martin?

The Dadeville side of the Lake sure does have the advantage with eating places.

I don't think boataholic, PC AL and I are complaining too much on the other side of the Lake.

It was a great place to take my kids in the 80's. I really like good fried catfish... has to be fresh though.

We could use a good boat-in restaurant in a couple of places. I love Chucks but something not quite so casual and for breakfast would be great. Like this one. :-)

BTW they served a GREAT breakfast. Elvis did the biscuits....

Well.....its kind of like this:

First you got your powerboaters. They like the bacon, the sausage & gravy, steak & gravy, biscuits, eggs, grits, cheese grits, pancakes and more biscuits & more gravy and Conecuh sausage for desert.

Then you got your sailors. They like the quiche, the french toast, Belgian Waffles, scones with curdled cream, yoqurt with fresh berries, whole grain muffuns, poached eggs on whole grain and cran-apple juice. Add a little cream of wheat and oatmeal and they are happy.

Now who do you want to party with on the lake?

Bay Pine Marina keeps you in the coffee. Sonya opens up early (when there is water) because they are the closest thing for the wind creek fishing tournaments. She sold a lot of meals this summer, such as boston butt BBQ plates, etc.. They have been fighting Alabama Power to be able to expand their septic system and add more restrooms so they can open the restaurant. I'm not sure of all the details however.

I would imagine their fight over the septic system is with the Tallapossa or Elmore (???) County Health Department. All the Counties have to follow the Alabama Rules (see attachment). I could be wrong, but I do not think AL Power gets involved other than the required set back from the Lake which is set-forth in the Alabama Rules.

The rules for new septic systems has become much more stringent. You can read the Alabama Rules in the below attachment.

I have had a dickens of a time getting approvasl for my septic plan for my new home.

Everyone building a new home needs to read and understand the below attachment. They can get you in trouble very quickly as I have found out. A two thousand dollar system has turned into a twelve thousand dolllar planed system for me personally, and I still do not have a system installed which will require a further final inspection approval. I am exaggerating a bit but not by much.

Yes, it is possible to build a new home without a septic approval as I have found out in Coosa Couty. Coosa County does not require building permits. I am not sure about Elmolre and Tallapossa Counties.

It is kind of amazing to me that with a new home or new construction things are so difficult for a septic system. It has turned out to be a very expensive lessons learned on my part. I guess that is why you see so many additions to old cabins as opposed to new homes around the Lake. The rules govern the size and type of spetic system based upon the size of the new hojme and number of bedrooms and baths. It is used to determine the size of the field lines and the type of spetic system which is allowed..

People are putting up major additons to old cabins and using their old septic systems that would never pass the new rules and/or law. for a new home. They have septic systems for a two bedroom and one bath cabin with 1,000 sq. ft., and they are adding a new place which had five bedrooms and four baths with over 4,000 sq. ft. of living area.

If the below attachment helps one other poor soul; then I have done my job for the day. It has helped make me a poorer soul. LOL

some of those old cabins have a 55 gallon drum for a septic tank. for the protection of the lake I wish all systems could be brought up to current regs.

Feb, I had my system installed in late 2004. It was inspected all the way even though Elmore County does not issue building permits. I have two 1,000 gallon tanks and a pumping station to send everything up hill to the field lines, electronic alarms, etc - it cost either $5,000 or $5,500.

You are right "8".

I will not have to have a pumping station, but the system itself and the other drainage situation on my lot are going to cost heavily like about fifteen grand. The plan itself was only about five grand, but I do not have the full bill on it yet. The engineers had to go all the way to the State (above the County) for approval. The County was covering their "butt" by reading the rules to the "T".

By the way, my place had a small Russell Cabin on it. prior to a burn down as a donation to the local fire dept. I decided against using a "Grandtather" on the old system since I could only forsee problems in the future.

The County read the rules to say any change in elevation for set-backs. My lot had changes going up hill vs. down hill which is what the rules (down hill) intended to address. We all know septic efluent will not flow up hill.

I am just fortunate (although broke money wise)

I have heard of folks having to put in a peat system which is extremely expensive on some lots. I do hope the pumping system you have is a less trouble than the old ones. You are lucky to have an uphill area to pump to.

I have the same two tank pumping system as does 8+4hcap (you said you could not play to it now). I built in 1999 and so far so good. I just wish I had taken more pictures of where everything is. I know approximately where the tanks are, but will have to prod around when I need to uncover. I should have taken exact measurements of the locations along with pictures. They are covered with a nice patch of sod now. Hate for the day to come.

Unfortunately, i do not believe i can even get to the 12 right now. As an additional problem I am having rotator cuff surgery on Friday so I will be out of commission for 8-12 weeks.

The system installed at my house hase 3 very large access covers so it will be har to lose. I also had to clear an area of dense tree cover for the field lines so i know about where they are. Hoping to put a garden there after I retire.

Feb - that was some bad luck. Hope some of the material prices are coming down on what you have left to do.

8 + ?

Hope your surgery goes well.

Keep us posted. Are you having it done in B-ham? There are some great doctors there. I may have to have my knees done there in the near term.

I have no real complaints or problems. Yes, it was more expensive than planned, but things could of been a disaster. I have learned a few costly lessons, but possibly not more so than most.

Actually, the County may of helped me more than I will ever know, Their stringent qualifications and people have helped us in a lot of other ways with various drainage and lot preps. They also insure the job is done right with their after the job is done inspection. I hope I don't end up biting my tongue on this statement.

On the other hand, construction cost are not going down. The only thing going down is my bank account. LOL

I do not think most people realize the bargain most previous owned house are these days compared to new construction. Labor and materials are way up.

I would love to hear what prices are these days per sq. ft., but it is a hard measurement since so much depends upon what you having done. Upgrades to a simple house can drastically change the cost.

Feb:

Mother had both knees replaced about 4 years back. Highly recommend Dr. Kool at Medical Center East - outstanding doc without a doubt.

Mother interviewed like 3 docs which were referred to her by others. One doc highly recommended, but no bedside manner, she felt like all he cared about was the business inomce and nothing else. Other Doc was better than first, but Kool spend hours with her explaining everthing from start to finish.

After her surgery Kool came out and spoke with me and you felt like he was there to answer any questions and was not in a hurry to rush off somewhere.

So when the time comes I would more than highly recommend Dr. Kool, no if ands or buts about it.

We need to get some folks back in the Live Chat. Room. I will post a separate message with this recommendation.

I will also jump on later this evening.

His name is Shane Buggay. Sounds weird but he is a good guy. He is part of the Southview Medical Practice which I have been using for over 20 years. The due diligence I have done indicates he gets good results. If you need knee replacement I would go to the Huston Clinic in Columbus. This is the Clinic Jim Andrews trained at.

As to costs, we had a builder post a while back that $200 per square foot was not high enough for homes in the Ridge. I tend to agree with that if you are looking at the top half of the homes there. Concrete and drywall are starting to decrease but you are probably done with those materials.

Work 3 days, get paid for 7 then watch the rocks stack themselves for the 4 off days with a beer in each hand. LOL.

Just teasing you jlazc, but was not teasing about wanting your work schedule. Man oh man what I could accomplish at the Lake if I had 4 days a week to be there. Compared to about 1 and 1/2 days at best now. You sub out jlazc, as I need the boat ramps excavated, formed and rebar installed. Then about 60 yards of concrete poured, I will provide all the materials - LOL.

Plus work at the lake, is not really work in my opinion. Still have not figured out why, guess after it is all said and done you can just look at the view instead of going inside. Or if you get frustrated go take a boat ride.
