The storm damage in Prattville doesn't qualify for federal assistance because in the area affected, a majority of the items damaged are insured. Does something seem wrong here to you?

These are lower middle class persons. The house value of that area averages 120k to 140k. (Range is much higher as some newer neighborhoods were also affected, just not as heavily). See MLS 251007, 249375, 245389.

Some of these houses may be rentals, so the renters have loast everything if they didn't have rental insurance. BUT the house would be insured by the owner so its the less fortunate renter who is hung out to dry with all their possessions lost.

In other areas which receive federal funding the relief is not limited to uninsured, so why use it as a factor in the decision? What a crock!

On the other hand, why is this community being punished by Uncle Sam for being hard workers who pay taxes, and insurance premiums and then left hung out to dry for assistance? I am not talking about Uncle Sam giving out hand outs for people to blow, I am talking about funds for clothing, food and other necessities, to include the difference in rent now that that market will go sky-high. Also keep in mind that since federal funds are not authorized all assistance comes out of the State. Wonder where the feds had justification to support guarding the banks? Weren't they insured? Were local and State Law Inforcement not adequate?

Neither myself or my family was directly impacted by this, but it still isn't right. I guess now is my time to put my house up for rent and jump on the bandwagon... If I do, I will not inflate the rate....

Good Ole Uncle Sam... taking care of those in need, as long as they are illegal immigrants, or able to work but won't. The working class & the elderly on fixed incomes seem to foot the bill, but don't qualify for any assistance. It's a sad time for the average family in America.

This honestly just sickens me. All I can think about is when Katrina hit, and how much FEMA had to help. Before I start my little soapbox session here I want you to understand where I am coming from... I grew up in Pensacola, I have been through plenty of hurricanes and severe weather.

What ticks me off is the fact that when Katrina hit the residents of New Orleans had been warned for DAYS to get out ! But instead FEMA had to send in assistance right away and were continuously cussed at and talked about for trying to give a helping hand. I remember the Debit cards that were given out with our tax payers money.

The People of Prattville did not have a warning, and have lost all of their possessions and the Federal Government can't help at all... why??? because more than 50% were insured.

Here is a little bit more of the information... In New Orleans, everyone, INSURED and NOT got FEMA help... because the law reads that if FEMA is going to help, they have to help everyone. So why do they help the insured in New Orleans and not Prattville? It seems to me that if 98% of Prattville residence had insurance, it is probably the same 98% that have good jobs and pay their taxes... but yet get turned away... it honestly makes my stomach turn. I don't think the people are asking for handouts but honestly, we live in Prattville and there are not enough available houses to replace what has been lost, especially short term housing. Heck, one of the largest apartment complexes was destroyed as well. I still know people in Pensacola which are fighting with their insurance companies from Ivan and look at how long ago that was. These people need assistance now.

Why as taxpayers do we not have a right to say how the money is spent anymore??? Seems I might have some letter writing to do.

Thanks for letting me rant. I will step off my soap box now and go find some stamps.

I still haven't figured out how the Fed. Gov. ended up being responsible for private citizens homes in the first place.

If you are unhappy with our government and policies, be sure to thank the liberal Democrats.

I agree with clearwater... how did the gov. become responsible for private homes? However, if they are going to do it for some why not all? The reason is because you don't see the residents of Prattville on National news cursing about how the government is doing them wrong. Instead they are level headed people who are working together as a community should to fix the problem.

Trying to follow your logic here. How do you figure the problems in this country are because of the liberal democrats given that we have had an extremely not liberal and not democratic so-called leader for 8 years? For the record, I don't believe in many of the policies of the liberal democrats either. We need to start getting real and getting fair. So much easier said than done.

We have professional politicians of both stripes that work for their interests not ours. I say throw them ALL out.
