Received application from the Lake Martin Resource Association today. On the face, appears to be similar to HOBOs. Do we need two groups? Anyone know the difference in the two?

Do not have a clue what the difference is.

With regards to the HOBOs there was a very nice article written about the organization in the current issue of the Lake Martin Living Magazine. (Click the Link below to read the article.) Covers how and why the HOBO organization was formed, some of the accomplishments it has made in such a short time frame, etc.

All I know is that LMRA has been idle since about 2001 or 2002 from a membership standpoint. As their website and membership application has not been updated since such date.

Received same letter today from Ben Russell and application form. The letter from Ben was the same as in the latest Lake Martin Living Magazine. The membership application is essentially the same as years past except it seems annual dues are higher (go figure). I belonged to LMRA for several years and supported their efforts (annual lake cleanups, in particular).

Since public involvement in the waters wars was cutoff about 5 years ago, very little has been heard from LMRA. I believe Ben's latest letter and new board of directors is an effort to crank the organization back up.

You ask, do we need two organizations? We need at least one that has sufficient clout to protect this resource treasure and the investments Martin's home and boat owners as well as supporting businesses. Guess eventually we'll see who's best of breed.

I got the same mailer from LMRA and wondered if the market would support two also........so my opinion here is from the standpoint of being a charter member of the HOBOs, but not speaking for the organization............After some thought I can see some fantastic potential that could come from both groups playing to their strengths for "Preserving Lake Martin for Future Generations", but, eventually the issue will come down to which group we all will join, as most people will not likely join both...........A small concern I picked up from the letter from Mr Russell was his statement that they supported the early summer emergency releases that were made which compounded the effects of the drought, and has had a devestating effect on the local economy. Some how I think that was a very small group of people who made that choice without a lot of imput from the rest of us stakeholders.........I will stay with and support the HOBOs for a couple of reasons: it's membership is widespread around the lake and the Board represents that diversity......homeowners, boatowners and businesses, and second the Board will by definition look after the interests of that diverse membership or they will get booted out................I don't know Mr Russell or any of the LMRA folks( I'm sure they are all honorable people who will be diligent in their efforts), but , Russell Lands has a very well defined economic interest in their many investments which is completely expected....................I just don't think their decisions will or can be bent to take into account the interests of the dramatically different population that makes up Lake Martin now as opposed to when there were only a few cabins here. Whereas I can get to know the HOBO Board members, or volunteer and even run for a position in the organization and thereby influence it's agenda..............I hope both organizations are successful.......but I also hope the HOBOs remain a viable force that is laser focused on the needs of its almost 2000 members and the local economy we all support, now and into the future.

Once again Rude, you seem to be "right-on".

It was nice meeting you the other evening.

The pleasure was all mine Feb, and thanks for the comment..............now don't forget to get that Rolls all fixed up, I've taken my Austin Healey back to Marietta to spend a few $$ on it to make it major trip road worthy! (That means it may only break down once or twice per trip)!! We'll have a British Car showing one of these days.

Dadeville Chamber of Commerce has an antique car show scheduled for May 31. Sounds like the best concession would be wrecker service.

Keep the value up by keeping the mileage down....dang, those Brits are sneaky smart.

We live 13 hours away and only get to visit the lake 2 times a year, however we will be retiring on the lake in 2 years. I received the same letter today and had the same questions as you. How unbiased can Ben Russell be regarding lake preservation if his last name is Russell? I will continue to support the HOBOS. A copy of their budget and mission would have been appreciated. I have no background knowledge of LMRA Sorry!

I too recieved a LMRA application. I joined about twelve years ago and the only time I ever heard from them was when it was time to pay dues. They only came out because the HOBOs are really helping get things done. I will continue to support the HOBOs.

The last annual LMRA meeting I attended (which may have been the last they held) was either 2001 or '02. I recall seeing a financial statement that indicated LMRA had about $85,000 in their kitty. Not sure what they were spending it on since APCo was paying for the hazard bouys that LMRA was putting out in the lake. I'm sure $ome went for the recent mass mailing to drum up new members.

I just hope the resurgence of LMRA does not result in another 'Hatfields versus McCoys' shootout between them and the HOBOs. Good leadership on both sides will make the difference--hopefully for the better.

Ben is getting a little worrried that he no longer has "total" control. I hope both organizations can work together, but do not plan to join LMRA (I also got my letter).

Sounds like HOBOs could use LMRA's mailing list.

I will have to wait until I get home to see if I got a copy of the invite.

I was wondering how they got ours? We have a lot in River Oaks and we thought the HOA were the only ones who had our personal information.

River Oaks is a Russell Lands development.

For now, the public plan is for LMRA and HOBO to co-exist. Don't be surprised later on when you will be asked to choose, and don't be surprised to learn the consequences of choosing wrong. If you don't believe me, ask James Meadows how things like this work around here.
