how does the release through the turbines relate to the release through the spillway?

Are they related? I'm sure water is continually released, even when not generating power.

Thanks.

Yes, water is continually passing through the dam. When they start generating a divierter sends the water through the 'snails' and into the generators. Water only goes over the 'spilways' when the flood gates are open.

With all due respect I much disagree with LTL. Water is only going through the dam via the penstocks when they are generating electricity. A very small amount leaks through the seals at the penstocks and the flood gate seals. It is insignificant in quantity. If you notice the generators turning very slowly (from inside the powerhouse) when not generating it is because they are actually turned by electric motors on top of the generators. This done to keep the bearing properly lubricated and to reduce start stress on the assembly.

Rest in peace, He Who Dares to Disagree With LTL (aka He Who is Always Right, No Matter What the Facts Say.)

I hate to ruin your day, dmp, but LTL is about to lay a big fat "minus" on your rating; if he's in a particularly surly mood (that is to say, awake) then he might even slap you with the dreaded "iggy." I pray that you will have the strength to carry on, even without the "LTL Seal of Approval."

Where does one go to view these ratings and what is an "iggy"?

and according to Alabama Power reports to the Corps of Engineers there have been only 11 discharges for very short periods of time in all of 2008.

Hi Maddog, Simly click on the handle name (alias) for the poster, and you will see a screen showing the rating system. You can then choose to rate (positive or negative) or choose to ignore a specific poster. I just went in and clicked on your alias and your profile was empty. I went ahead and gave you a positive rating which gave you a current profile rating on 1.

At your above post (the one I am responding to) click on your alias.

Feb, thanks for the info on "how to rate". I checked out a few and that's pretty interesting.

That you think NO water is being realeased unless they are generating power. Interesting, but wrong. And yes I know that a very small amout goes thruogh the turbines continously, but I also know that water passes through jsut the same. How do you think the water gets downstream?

LTL, I'm sorry but you are mistaken. My grandfather worked on the turbine and dam design. We still have copies of many of his drawings and calculations. I have taken many tours of the dam and talked to a lot of the APCO employess there over the years (many years)! NO water passes through the turbines except when they are running. That is (of course) how the water gets downstream.

Please do your research before posting another incorrect assertion.

Right on dmp! My info on Martin dam leakage (albeit somewhat dated) is that about 70 cfs worth of 'leakage' occurs from the dam. When the turbines are not crank'in, most of the downstream flow above Thurlow dam is from trib inflow to Yates and Thrulow in addition to the Martin dribble.

...and we won't even talk about those leaks coming through the cracks in the dam....although they are apparently harmless, those stood out in my mind when I made the grand tour!

I too have made several tours of the dam, and have a relative who has worked there on several projects. I am not certain as to how much, if any passes through, while not gnerating, but I can assure you that IT CAN. And not just leakage. I have been in places in the dam that the general public NEVER gets to go, and had the pics to prove it till a computer service tech wiped the wrong drive on an old computer. Some to the pics of th dam on this website were submitted by me. I have seen the diverter door so I know it is there.

As for the leakage. All dams leak. Logan Martin is one of the worst leakers in the country. Several projects to stop that leak have failed.

I live close to Logan Martin Dam(Talladega County side) and when You cross over the dam You will notice that there is a permanent concrete mixing plant, two pump trucks and two drilling trucks there always. All of this equipment has APCO logos on them. This is one of the dams that is more earth than concrete, and the earth part was built on shale formations thus has the leaks. To me one of the best looking dams is the Lay Dam also on the Coosa River between Weogufka and Clanton close to Cats Place.
