you mean the ruling on the boat ban. Is it not possible for you to be in a boat that is less than 26' ?

The Alabama legislature banned from Lake Martin, Lake Harris and Weiss Lake large houseboats and boats that can run faster than 60mph and that are 26 feet, 11 inches or longer. It was done, say proponents, to cut down on damage caused by wakes.

Wonder who had damage caused by a big fast boat that caused this? I guess smaller boats and PWC's will be next. Heck before you know it, we will not be allowed to have gasoline powered boats on the lake at all because it might damage some snail darter or cause damage. What is enough?

They will not be able to prove anything like that. This law was not put in effect for anything other than money. No matter how upset local lakers are they do not have the power to get this passed. This came down because of Georgia developers wanting to build a large resort type development on Lake Harris. The interested party was the developers of Reynold's Plantation Resort Community. This is a 10,000 acre resort community including homes, condos, golf and a Ritz Carlton hotel. They would not invest in Alabama without guarantee's on large boat restrictions especially house boats. Senator Dial who sponsored the bill admitted this back in March 2006. Alabama Power owns 70% of the land on Harris of which some will be needed for the new developement. The result is this law. Both RL and Alabama Power can see the attraction a lake like Lake Martin is to big time developers. Can you see the future Hilton or Marriott? I can. I have both a beautiful home (my sanity) on Lake Martin and a cruiser that is now considered banned (although is grandfathered in by one week) so I will not need the room....but I wonder how many Marriott/Hilton points they will be worth?
