Can anyone tell me what it means when I crank up my outboard motor (1997 Evinrude 112 HP) and it keeps making a solid beeping noise. The motor cranks up with no trouble..any idea what this is warning me off? Any help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks!

...oil related.

I'm not familiar with that particular engine, but that beep is usually either a water pressure sensor or, as previously mentioned, an oil injection problem (or related sensor). Keep in mind it could just be a sensor problem and not a "real" problem.

Most outboards have a pitot outlet to indicate proper water flow. Always ck for that. If it is oil related you could always run a 50:1 mix until you diagnose so as to not damage your engine. You might "Google" some outboard repair forums for more info.

Good luck.

I think you have gotten some good advice.....look inside cowling also for extreme dirt dauber activity...those little critters can shut down a good outboard...

Nice to know the alarms actually work. I have never had an alarm go off on one of my outboards and I was beginning to wonder if they even work.

OMC and Mercury both have a terrible reputation for oil pump gears going out and burning up the power heads. Wish someone had advised me to mix gas and oil in older outboards--had a boat with twin outboards running at speed; one outboard burned up because the oil pump gear destroyed itself, and I never heard the alarm. Save yourself $2 - $3,000, mix your oil and gas in your gas tank on older ('80s - '90s) outboards.

On that note, if you do mix and bypass the injector would you leave your resevoir empty or is there a process to disconnect the oil injector. I have a 90 horse 95 model merc.

Better ask someone like Catboat that question.

You must be a single gentleman. It means it is angry...that's a warning signal. Quit pi$$ing it off before it blows. It's nice enough to warn you!
