Folks... With the water at full pool, I can't believe there is so much to complain about. Sounds like a personal and relationship problems but what we really have here is a phenomenon called Flame Wars... They are not unique to the LakeMartin.com forum and can spawn on any public forum. I've been away from the forum and non-participatory for a long time. That has changed.

So yesterday I go to my own site's forum to see what is going on and it is dreadfully painful to read through 50% of the posts that are related to interpersonal relationship issues that have no relevence to the lake.

Good Information about flame wars can be read at the URL below.

How are forum members blocked? Seems that blocking is the only means to avoid "contact' with the warring parties. Are there other means besides avoiding the forum all together?

I philosophically don't like blocks becuase it does not accomplish the goal. There is a forum posting block possible (technically) but you have to understand additional accounts can be created.

So would you like to be familiar with what you may deem as an offensive person (who you could ignore if you choose), or have what looks like multiple new offensive people posting cluttering the board? That's the best I can explain it...

People seem to think that a ban on someone is an end all solution, but it complicates things if the banned person is determined to continue with activity.

Bruce, you might as well tell them why blocking an IP address will not work either, that will be their next question!

Don't tase me Bro'....

every board out there has idiots having man-hood measuring contests....ego is a huge thing with some folks and in my experience in the hot rod/fast car world, it's way, way, worse.....funny, but worse....banning only makes these types re-double their efforts to be tools and cause mayhem.....and mayhem is my main source of entertainment on a slow day at work.....

it's just the internet...lighten up....or I'll sic my E-thuggin' homies on you....

Well since you brought it up...

I can tell what IP a person comes from. But let's say I block a particular IP, the workaround for the offender would be (in most non-business use cases) to unplug their modem (DSL, Cable, or Phone line) and upon re-use it would acquire a different IP. Eventually, if someone else on that system (Charter for example) were to acquire that IP they would be banned as well and that would be an unintentional block. Over time, unintentional blocks would accumulate and that would not be a good thing at all.

I agree Fester.... I asked a friend of mine (who regularly reads the forum) what started all this fuss... I was told (paraphrasing)... "Hey, It's just summer time again"... :-)

I would like to think that. Another comment that some of the root of all this started from long felt opinions of the big boat ban. But hey folks, personal attacks is not the way to go about this.

If you see someone make a stupid comment, can't you just let it go and let eveyone else determine for themsleves if they deem it a stupid comment. Does it actually have to be pointed out to everyone in a reply?

If you have some disagreement with something, shouldn't the approach be to get involved and try to change within?

Peace!

Thank you Bruce. I'm sure they will end this soon since fib (or is it feb) is not going to play patty cake with LTL and it should quite down shortly. I hope not but just the same it should. I for one promise not to contact you to complain about someone flaming me for something stupid I posted, and I do that often I guess.

See ya on the lake!.

Keep this particular board just as it is. Add another Lake Martin board, and make it a pay-to-play site. $5.95 per month isn't an unreasonable number.

People who serious about the lake can then have a site; it's amazing what people will do to keep something nice once they're paying for it.

And the others can continue to bait and flame on the free board, which can also be used by people who are just passing thru and have a question or two.

And best of all, Bruce gets to make a little money. :-)

Like I said, $5.95 per month isn't unreasonable. Even better would be a discount for paying for a year upfront, with the understanding that if Bruce has to ban you, he gets to keep all of the money you paid... even if you still have 364 days to go on your one-year subscription.

I don't know any of you and having read this board for a couple of years, there are many of you I don't wish to know. A funny retort is one thing but challenges to duels exceeds the bounds of polite discourse. You all are lucky enough to play on one of the prettiest lakes in the world, so take the Webmaster's advice, and simply be nice.

Okay.... This absolutely cracks me up. You have to note that although I'm the webmaster, I could be considered an outsider to the conversations I've been reading for 24 hours.

I don't know how Feb knows so much about LTL and don't quite get exactly where Feb "insinuates" LTL is a liar.... But to call a guy " sniveling whiney little shell of what a man is" is a bit much don't you think?

Wow... Shouldn't names like that be reserved for schizophrenic serial killers on death row? We're not dealing with that class of people here I don't think.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to delete more... And quite frankly, I don't know where to begin or end.

I just realized I may have offended people suffering from schizophrenia. It is a terrible disease and I apologize. I did not consider how a name LTL used and my insinuation could offend someone. I do not apologize to serial killers though.

I hope the readers take all this as light as I am.

I would eventually like to meet everyone who is on Lake Martin and posts here, regardless of whether they seem kind or ugly. When I sense negativism, I just move on to the next post most of the time.

I'm thinking of placing an extra cooler of beer in my boat and hanging a sign over the side that says "Stressed-out forum members pull up and have a free one on me." Maybe whomever blocked me will find my better side.

Webmaster writes: "I just realized I may have offended people suffering from schizophrenia. It is a terrible disease and I apologize. ."

My initial reaction was one of being offended, but all the little voices in my head said to just let it slide. ;)

Being fairly new to the lake, I don't "anchor" much. Usually just ride around looking for those few people I know. BUT, weather permitting, I will be around the rock Saturday, maybe Sunday also in a taupe colored Harris flotebote, wearing my usual orange cap (War Eagle). There will be beer, there always is and all stressed forum members are welcome, though you don't seem to be one of the stressed ones. Look for me. I'll also be on the lookout for CAT as I'd like to meet the man behind all the decals. I live on the Blue Creek side of the lake.

Well I'm off ended, I don't think of it as suffering, I rather enjoy my schizophrenia. And so do I. Me too. Don't count me out.

Bruce, figured you were smarter than to allow yourself to be ignored (iggy). Sounds like time for a software upgrade.

Shoot me an email next time you are at the lake as I owe you dinner and a cold one.

Now that sounds good. I'm in the RV Park slough. You have to pass by on your way to the Rock.

Not familiar w/ the RV Park. I'm on the Blue Creek water, but on Pleasure Pt side land off of a little road named Bob White. Is that close?

Do you know where BAMA Park is? Or was I thinking they call it Lake Martin RV Park now, there is a slough right next to it, sounds like that is where he is. If you are on Bob White you are very close by water. If you come out of the slough that you can see from Bob White go south and make a left at the end of that slough as if you were going to the rock, it is in the first slough on the right, the one with the big white house that looks like a country club. Bama park is where all the little park model campers are, there is a slough on the left as you come to the park.

feb standard disclaimer: That is my opinion and I believe it to be true.

feb and lakeman...bff's

Not much of a beer drinker myself. I will tip a botle of Vodka though. And trust me, I am NOT stressed, I AM HAVING FUN FUN FUN. Fun like I have not had in a while. feb bashing is my favorite pasttime, has been for years, but I put it away last year in the interest of forum unity. I did till he chose to trot out and attack me and my integrity, which I still have. He however proved that he has NONE. He stated he would admit he was wrong if anybody chose to tell him so. Well two folks DID, HE DID NOT!! Integrity means doing what you say you will do. But of course he thinks he is soooo smart, while barely able to complete sentences most of the time, and not able to at others, he requires 'sworn statements', not jsut the word of respected forum members. In his world if someone comes to your home, you lay out all your personal business for them to see ie; deeds and mortagages so they can give sworn statements to feb when he requires them.

Will be looking for you also, but still not sure of the area. If I come out of my "cove" and turn right, I head toward the marina close to the rock. Coming out of my cove and going straight across the big water, I will go up Blue Creek, so I think the RV park must be over around Chucks, or at least on that side. ??? Bob White is south off of Wildwood. Wildwood is off of 34. I need to cruise more and get familiar with the lake.

Either use Google Maps' satelite version and virtual tour, or download Google Earth... Cheapest way to "Tour" the lake. It won't take any time to figure out where things are that way...

I think if you come out and head straight across the big water of Blue Creek to the other bank you will be close enough to find the trailer park that lakeman lives in. He refers to my 'ripple' because I also like Arbor Mist wine. To him if it ain't the original redneck beer it aint nothing. I must be in good company because Arbor Mist is one of the biggest selling wines in the country now. I don't let him bother me. He knows I can best him at any time in anything because he is dumb as a stump. He likes to threaten me with his brother's in law. They gonna come whup me good some day to get revenge for him and his bff feb. I tremble in fear daily.......lmao.
