Thinking of putting up some bird houses to keep mosquito population down. Any bird experts know if it is too late for them to build nests in a box?

I don't know about bird houses but bat boxes do extremely well in this area and the bats fly at night when the bugs are the worst in my area. They also eat their weight in bugs every night.

Thanks. Really didn't think about that. Will have to google and see how to build. I guess the bats will just come to them naturally.

Yea, but they have to built pretty specific to the specs. And as with anything location matters too, and also like birds the timing has to be right. but if you have the time and means to make them why not do both? birds can take care of the daytime bugs and the bats at night. I can also highly recomend the comercial mesquito deleto. Those are GREAT for combating the nasty little blood suckers. There are several available at the home improvement stores. They run on propane and convert it to co2 which attracks the bloodsuckers then zaps or traps them dependng on the model.

No...not too late...some species may nest as many as 3 times in a year......recommend you google for info on the type of bird you wish to attract and read about their nesting habits....ventilation becomes crucial in the hotter months....good luck!!

I hope so. I was told they eat mosquito's as as a bat would. Aren't sparrows the one's that build nests in those little wooden boxes and gourds?

YES. It is martins that I am trying to attract, not sparrows.

Well, you don't really need a birdhouse. I have martins nesting under my pontoon boat, which is parked on a lift. Take them for a spin every once in a while. Doesn't seem to bother them.

We also have birds nesting under our pontoon. Our birds look more like barn swallows than martins. The boat, however, is in the water and we cruise it around regularly. We have NOT driven the boat since we discovered the birds. They may have been there the whole time we were cruising and just didn't know it.

Will they really stay put during a cruise around the lake? I hate to give up my sunset booze cruise.....

Purple martins like to be up high and in an open area so they can come in like a plane on approach. A lot of folks will put the martin house by the lake shore.

If possible, keep sparrows (all kinds) away from other bird nests. They tend to take over (steal) nests, build their own over another and kill whatever is in there. They like Eastern Blue Bird houses.

Mine are always circling waiting on us to come home. It has not seem to bother them for years now. They raise babies every year.

Agree that the birds don't actually go for a ride, but hang out at the dock and await our return. Nest and contents do make the trip and doesn't seem to cause them any harm. The sunset coctail cruises can continue....
