First, this is not meant to be advertising! I spent the day yesterday (4-23-08) in a 2008 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. As most know, I work at and manage a Chevy dealership. (Outside of Cathouse) After driving it home, running around town last night and returning to work this morning the average fuel mileage of this vehicle was 25.8 mpg. ( traveled over 100miles combo city/highway) That number is not all that great compared to compact cars, but it is amazing compared to Dee Dee's Tahoe (non-hybrid) she had that got 17mpg at best! We're talking full size SUV here and mpg goes up 33%. (According to the sticker is wasnt suppose to, but it did) Say someone spends $100 a week on fuel, this means $132 or so in savings a month! This particular Hybrid depended of fuel and electricity for propulsion and required no re-charging. It is amazing to me the technology and research that is going on all around us. I read about it all the time, but this is the first time I have really done a real life test/experience so to speak. I think our future will be bright with alternative energy sources. Anyway, as you can tell I was intriqued to say the least.

Think you could rig up the Cat Boat with a similar set-up?

Just add a bunch of batteries, and replace your trim tabs with paddle wheels, have a belt drive to an alternator, a solenoid to drop the paddlewheels into the water when you back off the throttle. Problem solved. I also have a suggestion to help make Al Gore's plane more uh... global friendly - it is far more simple - get to 35,000', kill the turbines and pop out the mast and sails. That would make it a sailplane right? :-)

I was thinking about installing a ThermoNuclear Reactor in the PP to get me by. Shouldn't have to re-fuel in my lifetme... Leave it up to my kids to clean up the waste. Heck, by then all the "Cruisers" on the lake will all be 40 to 80 years old anyway. Wonder how pretty that will be?

OK, serious now. The fuel savings is %25, what is the cost of Hybrid versus non-Hybrid, same vahicle?

The cost of the Hybrid is the same as a Fully loaded Tahoe. The Hybrid is missing some electric parts such as heated seats, power lift gate, roof rack (to lower drag) center row bucket seats and heated second row seating. Things that would use more 12 volt power. It still have full leather, navigation and sunroof though. It is hard to compare the two when it comes to equipment really. Hybrid and Non Hybrid are both very well equipped. Sorry for the savings error.

Another Q - how about towing ability. Same as the gas model?

Have not thought about it really.. Good question. I looked it up. Towing capacity on Gas model is 7,500 lbs. Towing capacity on Hybrid is 6,200 lbs. 1,300 lbs. different. Not to bad, and probley from the weight of the battery pak I assume.

Cat:

Is the Hybrid only good for around town driving as most of my driving is Hwy and at one point I was thinking the hybrid savings only really came into play in city driving.

So does Chevy make a hybrid Silverado??

Mav - I'll make you a deal on my Chevy 1500HD crew cab. Gets around 12 MPG (downhill with a tail wind).

At moderate hwy speeds of say 60mph, the Hybrid Tahoe uses both the gas engine and electric motor. EPA estimates are 21 city/22hwy. When vehicle is at slow speeds it only operates on electric mostly, but sometimes both power plants. I don't know why my results were higher than EPA estimates because I did not cut it much slack. I really kinda drove normal. It is a very interesting unit. Hybrid Silverado is coming soon I believe.

Just looked up the Silverado on Chevy's site suppose to be out in fall 2008 or sooner.

Estimated MPG 50% higher than gas. Going to use a 6.0L engine.

The GM Silverado pickup truck was originally launched in 2005 as a very mild hybrid vehicle. The 2009 Silverado hybrid pickup truck, however, will be launched as the the first full, dual mode hybrid vehicle, as it was when it debuted at the LA Auto Show.

Available in late 2008 as a 2009 model, the Silverado hybrid will be built on the same hybrid powertrain as the Chevy Tahoe hybrid and the GMC Yukon hybrid.

Using a 6.0L V-8 and Electrically Variable Transmission (EMT), the Silverado hybrid, much like the Tahoe hybrid is expected to provide a significant increase in fuel economy. For example, the Chevy Tahoe hybrid can increase fuel economy by as much as 50 percent.

The industry's first full size hybrid pickup truck will deliver this exceptional fuel economy, without giving up full-size pickup truck performance. So, you can still pull your boat or camper without worry.

With an advanced EMT and a 300-volt NiMH battery, Active Fuel Management and late-intake valve closing combined with the 6.0L V-8, the Silverado hybrid pickup will be able to drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone and operate in economical 4-V power more often.

Nonetheless, when you need to pull your boat, or haul a ton - literally - of material to a worksite, the Silverado hybrid can function completely on V8 power.

not trying to be funny but a bass boat with an electric trolling motor is one of the truest forms of a hybrid vehicle--

I read an article not too long ago comparing multiple hybrid vehichles. It was a road test, from I believe Chicago to DC. All the vehichles performed above their fuel ratings. I wondered why myself. But maybe they somehow calculate in using the gas more... better to stay on the lower side and make the customer happy when they get better mileage then advertised ...

But how much does it cost to replace the batteries? How long are they guaranteed?

Battery warranty is 100,000 miles. Sorry, I did not see this post til now.

And the replacement cost? I routinely drive mine over 100K. Of course with gas at $4gal that might become moot.

BTW you doing OK? Good heath checkups?
