Does anyone have any information concerning a near fatal scorpion sting at the lake recently?

I heard this may have occured and if true is scary. When we first got our cabin last year I found a small scorpion. I have't seen any since.

I do know that most of the scorpions in this region are non lethal...but that doesn't mean all of them.

I don't know about the situation you mention, but scorpions are like many other venomous insects; reactions can vary widely between individuals....I wouldn't worry about it, and if you get stung get proper medical attention as soon as possible.

I'm really not so much worried about myself as I am for my kids. After some internet reading it seems that pre-schoolers are in much more danger if stung.

The rumor is the near fatal sting was in a college age adult. I hope it is just a rumor as I have yet to substantiate the report.

Jlazc is right. Not everyone reacts to bites & stings the same. My brother was stung by a scorpion and said it was no more than a bee sting. My grown son was biten by a black widow spider that sent us rushing to the ER- fast. His head looked like a basketball and his throat was closing up so he couldn't swallow. We were advised to always keep Benadryl on hand. It comes in adult and children's form. Fortunately it's never happened again but you never know who might have that same kind of allergic reaction.

I'm a former ER nurse and to the best of my knowledge, the scorpions in Alabama aren't poisonous like the ones in the west. However, some people are allergic to the venom. This can cause anaphylaxis...where they have difficulty breathing. My advice is, if we're going to be outside in the summer, we need to keep Benadryl on hand. If untreated, this kind of allergic reaction can result in death.

Quite a bit of difference between our scorpions and a Black Widow; the reactions you describe are expected. The near-fatal reaction to the sting of a local is an allergic reaction, meaning the same scorpion would not have affected someone who is not allergic.

Bottom line: do not fear our scorpions, unless you're allergic. If you're not, you have nothing to worry about.

Two years ago (the last time we had water) I was on a jet ski and kept feeling something under my ski vest. I thought it was a bee stinging me so I came to the dock and took off my ski vest and there was a scorpion on my back. Scared the heck out of me. Must have been on my vest when i put it on ... so now i look closer. Called the ER and they did not even tell me to come in ... other than some minor irritation like a bee sting all was fine.

I have been stung twice. Once in the hand and once on the leg. The one in the hand felt like being shocked and rushed up my arm. I do have some allergic reactions to bee stings however. Different reactions for different people . A good first aid kit on hand is never a bad thing.

I got stung at the Lake last summer. I put on my shoes on the porch and got stung on the top of my foot. Pain and some swelling..but I have more of a reaction to bees and wasps.

Small scorpion..barely an inch.
