On CBS news last night, a story about arrests on LM this past weekend was on there. Reported that 35 people were arrested at the rock this past weekend. Most were underage drinkers but one was for BUI and one was for weed. That is alot of people and I hope they get rid of the underage drinkers. I saw a kid....no way he was 21 funneling out of a swim noodle. I didn't realize funneling was still the thing to do. Anyway, on the flip side my buddy was stopped for 13 on a pontoon. Officer checked him....checked for the requirements....and let him go. Moral of the story....be legal and your good to go.

Make sure you always have the kill switch lanyard hooked up to you, I can tell you for a fact that ticket is not cheap. I got in a hurry once and did not hook up, they will not cut any slack on it and really should not. I’m thinking of having a hook implanted on my wrist for this.

Is the requirement that the lanyard/kill switch be attached at all times during operation only applicable to PWC's? I didn't see in the reg's where it applies to larger boats, such as a 22 foor pontoon.

PWCs must either be equipped with an ignition safety switch or have a self-circling feature. If equipped with an ignition safety switch, the lanyard must be attached to the person, clothing or PFD of the operator.

Vessels less than 24 feet in length, with an open cockpit and powered by more than 50 horsepower, must be equipped with an ignition safety switch with the lanyard attached to the person, clothing or PFD of the operator.

Vessels equal to or greater than 24 feet in length, must be equipped with an ignition safety switch with the lanyard attached to the person, clothing or PFD of the operator.

Okay Mav,

I am confused by the following statement that you wrote...

"Vessels equal to or greater than 24 feet in length, must be equipped with an ignition safety switch with the lanyard attached to the person, clothing or PFD of the operator."

I don't see that on the url....

You are not --- I read it wrong it is up to 26', (per the table) then I assume over 26' feet you are OK. Never had a boat that big, so have no clue.

But guess my question would be if boat is over 26' no kill switch is required. That does not make sense, does it?

Mav...you were partially right in your earlier post.

Boats of open construction (no permanent top) less than 24' with more than 50 hp are required to have an emergency shut-off switch. The lanyard to this switch it required to be attached to the boat operator.

Boats 24' and longer are not required to have one.

The reasoning is that most boats over that size weigh alot more and are more stable, having a lower occurrence of the driver being thrown overboard or thrown from the helm.

Some of the laws are so stupid, they let kids and adults jump off a rock 40 ft. up. Then if you have a person riding in the passenger SEAT in front of the driver on a 21 FT. Sea Ray BOW RIDER ( THIS HAPPENED TO ME) the Marine Cowboys pull you over and say it is unsafe. Just don`t make no sense.

The tables show a check mark under the column - Boat 16 Ft. To Less Than 26 Ft. -- for ignition kill switch.

But then the column is denoted by the statement vessels less than 24 feet and more than 50 hp, operator has to have lanyard, etc. (Understand this)

Question is, just for clarification (just curious) -- So if you have a 24 foot to 26 foot boat you are required to have a kill switch, (as box is checked in the table) but not required to have it attached. Is this correct?

You and Mark stop by Monday and I will feed you guys some BBQ, but NO BEER as you are driving.

Be safe out their Gary and I for one appreciate all you guys do and your feedback on the forum !!!!!!

Just was looking at to quickly the column applies to all boat between 16 and 26 feet, but there are exceptions to the rules as denoted accordingly.

Therefore kill switch only applies to boats less the 24 feet, etc.

Anyway, again thanks though for all you guys do, very much appreciated !!!

Mav...I second that note of appreciation for the Marine Police and all they do...they have a lot of patience . I also appreciate them coming on the forum and helping the lake community to understand the laws on the water.

When you are driving the boat, it is best that you make it a "HABIT" to connect your kill switch to your shorts/life jacket each and every time. You don't have to get thrown overboard, only pitched/walk away from the helm and "Poof" noone is in control, even if at idle speed. You could run over a person, or hit another boat. Kinda like a safety belt. Just put it on. My .02 worth.
