I have a 4 person jet ski. Can I pull a tube with 4 riders plus 1 driver (5 total)? Or is the law you can only have the number that the jet ski is rated for?

The combined total cannot excede the capacity plate on the vessel. If its a two person jet ski, you can pull only one person and no riders...

PP,

Are you sure your information is accurate? I though the max person limit on the jetski is based on the floating weight and safety of the boat itself?

Any towables also have a max rider limit marking on them for the same reason?

Did you get ths info from the Alabama boaters rule book?

I couldn't find an Alabama law which identifies this as direct violation of the law. I had called Marine Police once about this because I wanted to pull a large "floating island" with some people on it to watch the fireworks show (with my previous boat, 10 person capacity max). I was told that could be considered careless driving if the total count exceeds the boat limit.

I think it would be at the discretion of the MP whether or not the action could be construed as careless, versus directly against the law.

But then again, just because I can't find it diesn't mean its not there...

I am not sure of the answer either, but it seems to me that you would have to be prepared to put anyone being towed onto the towing craft in case of mishap or emergency. In that case if the 'towees' put the craft over the maximum weight then it would seem to be illiegal or at the very least unsafe.

PP,

Thanks for the information. I will have a look at it.

Hope to catch up with you at the rock this weekend. I'll be looking for your boat. I haven't seen you in a while. . .

I'm hitting the road in 1 hour to head down to paradise.

Talk to you soon !

I think that is correct, it seems I remember hearing (where/who I don't remember) that when you are finished towing someone they need to be able to get in or on the vehicle that was towing them and drive away. Again this could be wrong, but logic would say it is correct; if the tow-able were to fail you'd have to be able to get that person out of the water and drive away. Not sure how they would handle it if you were very close to your own dock.

From the Alabama DCNR Administrative Code:

220-6-.18
3) Any person being towed on skis, aquaplane,
surfboard, spinner, tubes, or other similar devices shall be
considered an occupant of the towing vessel.

By the way, that act was repealed, and the replacement does not explicitly list the skier as an occupant...
