After being on the ocean (Lake Martin) this past weekend and battling 4 and 5 foot swells with no big boats in sight, I have to say the theory of big boats and their wakes doing damage to shoreline and causing the big wakes is COMPLETE BS! Having 5 trillion boats on the lake is what is causing the problem. It was very obvious what the plan was to battle the rough waves....PONTOON BOAT! They were out in full force. If you owned anything under 26' and it was fiberglass you were beat down! The area in front of the ridge marina (malfunction junction) is as close to gulf conditions as you can get and not be in salt water. Mother Nature did her part because It was indeed beautiful....but navigation was just horrible. Glad all the part timers got to get it out of their system and now are gone. We can resume normal conditions on the lake. The 4th is on a Friday.....that is going to be HORRIBLE!

From what we experienced Saturday, (and we had to cross wakes from all types of vessels) the large cruisers definitely put out a larger wake. Next were the wake boats. No consideration to bank erosion at this time, The large boats created more of a safety hazard. Bank it!!!

I was a bit indifferent to the big boat issue until I encountered three of the behemoths this weekend, each plowing deep furrows and leaving huge wakes. If these boats become common accessories for mega million dollar homes Russell now develops, you can forget enjoying the lake in your fishing boat, small ski boat, or pontoon. Since AlaPower has to consider all forms of recreation on the lake, and too many massive boats will impair some simpler forms of recreation, it make sense to ban the giant boats.

Where should we draw the line? If wake is the problem then why not get legislation that bans boats that are capable of creating wake over a certain size, regardless of boat size or potential speed? Run your bass boat or small runabout at 12 mph and observe the wake - we as operators can help keep some wake down. I consider myself a decent and fairly courteous boat operator, but while I can easily deal with wake from a large boat, it is the amount of traffic (sheer number of boats) creating helter skelter waves that no amount of throttle/trim/steering corrections can help. The boss wants to know how much longer our boat will last, and is talking about getting a pontoon boat for runs through the big water.

I have no idea how to define how much wake is too much, maybe some "expert" can figure that out. I just know these boats were huge, and the furrows they dug and they wake they left vastly exceeded anything I've ever seen from the most poorly driven "normal sized" boats on this lake.

Our boat is an 18 foot runabout, and with proper timing, I can deal with larger, more consistent wake, when it is a jumbled mess, I cannot read a good way through, perhaps someone more skilled can. I would rather deal with 1 boats big wake than that of 2 smaller boats. To me, a 24 foot boat is big - am I supposed to lobby for them to be banned?

No, 24 footers are very common already. You don't want the 40 to 50 footers to become common or you'll never be able to get on the lake in your 18 footer.

I can see no reason for a boat on lake Martin to have two motors. I do not have a problem if the boat is trailerable and is taken to the ocean but Russell sure has a lot of big Searay's with twin IO's that are not trailerable. Still, i like freedom and I am not in favor of the ban. We need rules of the road and speed limits and enforcement. With some enforcement most law-abiding folks would follow the law. In any event, if the limit is set at 65-70, very few boats on the lake can attain that speed.

The worst wakes are created by wake boats and boats off plane. The so-called 100' rule will do very little good. Most of the wakes we get at our house are from boats in the middle of the slough which is about 250 yards away. Maybe it will stop the pwc's from doing donuts in front of your pier.

I agree with you crimson! This is also the area where you had the very young seadoo drivers and you were worried for their safety due to lack of experience. I grew up on the coast and we did have to ride a few swells and follow behind others for a break in the waves. It was a big day and a lot of people out. It's no different to me than having to pick up a million fireworks on the beach after the tourist leave on a 4th of July weekend. You just deal with it and are glad to be an American with the freedom to experience it. After a few trips south to this area, we just decided to explore the Northern end a little more and there was not near as much traffic although busy. I love the lake life no matter what!

I do not have a problem with the big boats, it is the number of boats that creates the most problems for those of us with small boats. The big boats generally go someplace and moor, the smaller boats are the ones that tend to stay in motion and generate a lions share of the wake - Bling On the bigger boats. :-)

The biggest problem that I saw was amateurs riding around with their bows pointing to the sky and their lower units bragging the bottom(and yes, these were big boats). Either putt around or get on plane, but don't ride around in between! I miss last year when the water was too low for these morons.
