May 2008 cover for the Lake Martin Lake Magazine (www.lakemartinmagazine.com) is in bad taste. Beautiful aerial photograph of Chimney Rock, with one jumper in mid-air, 10 ready to jump and a handful in the water. Fun, exciting nice to look at BUT............
they in my opinion are sending the wrong message. Over the years how many youths have broke their necks, their backs even died?
Why would the magazine ENCOURGE potentially more jumpers to take the dive and risk a life altering injury? BY placing this photo on the cover, they are! I love the magazine but I think it is the wrong message to send.

I would totally agree.
Dangerous message, I would change my mind if the installed some life guards and jump instructers. Seen alot of folks injured over the years.

I'd bet the folks that get hurt or die had never jumped off any high places before and had no clue of how to do it. Jumping is not something you should do if you have no idea how to do it. I know my grandsons and probably both my granddaughters will have their butts on that top jump sooner or later so I am teaching them to do it and I think everyone should teach those that they bring to the lake to do so. I have even built a tower that is about 9 feet above full pool with another platform half way up, I've started teaching them to jump and buy the time they are old enough to hit the high jump they will know how to jump and dive from that height without getting hurt. You should also not allow anyone you bring here to jump if you have not seen them do so several times from the lower levels and if they have been drinking alcohol they should not even get near the rocks to jump, even the lower jump.

Were they diving or jumping? How deep is it to the bottom or to the next shelf? How high is the jumping platform (rock)? I am just wondering , as I have never been to that part of the lake. We have a place that people jump/dive from here that goes from 4 feet to 36.5 feet @ summer pool. I have only heard of one instance of severe injury here, and was just wondering.

I am not sure if this is acurate, however a EMS told me last year they responded to 16 "injury" calls at Acapulco & Chimney Rocks. All of different injury levels from minor to serious. I am not sure how many deaths, I was told 2 in the last 3 years.

The jumping will NEVER stop hopefully. There is a little thing called personal responsibillity that comes into play. There is a very nice plaque that was erected to remember the kid that died 2 years ago, but even his parents haven't sugessted that jumping should be banned. The story of the plaque is in this months Lake Magazine.

Crappy....the rock is about 50 or 60 ft. up. I might be off a little but it's pretty high. There are about 3 or 4 different levels of jumping "platforms". Most of the kids jump from the lower level which is probably 20 to 25 ft. There is no real platform to jump from you just have to wiggle your way to the edge and get your guts ready and jump. Some people dive from the top and I have on a time or two seen a flip. It is obvious when these people jump they know exactly what they are doing. Not that many get hurt jumping but I guess in reality if only one is seriously hurt that is too many. A few years ago a kid from up north jumped and landed wrong and he never resurfaced. Rescue divers found him a short time later in about 35 ft. of water. The water at the rock is probably 80 - 100 ft. deep. As far as shelf goes....there probably is a ledge or two that stick out but not anywhere near the surface. I have jumped many times (back in the day) and it is a real sight to sit up there and see all the jon boats down below. I say that because that is what they look like. Only bad thing about going up....pretty much only one way down. Almost impossible to climb back down. You should check it out one day. It is a huge part of what makes Lake Martin.....Lake Martin. The lower level is fun to jump from...just high enough.

Not as many as have been injured or killed while boating; would you complain if they had a picture of a boat on the cover?
There is of course an element of danger and risk involved with jumping from the Rocks; to me, it would be scarier to swim back to the boat after jumping that it would be to actually jump. With that many boats gathered in one place it's only fair to assume that a percentage of the drivers aren't paying enough attention.
I have been here since DDE was in the White House, and I can count the rock-jumping deaths I remember on one hand.

I hear you about the swimming back part, last weekend I saw a guy swimming back to a boat and he went under and swam a pretty good ways, a boat was going that way and was lucky he say the guy when he came up and stopped. That was pretty dumb of the swimmer........

DJ, I took care of this the hard way.
I told my kids "no".
|
There is an article on the rock and jumping in an old magazine. It tells you how many feet and the hazards that are under the water including many old broken bottles. It was good info to know before jumping.
