Subject:   How dispose of floating dock

I have a 12x16 floating dock I would like the get rid of. It is old, but it is still serviceable. However, I have no need for it. Does anyone want it or have any ideas how to get rid of it? It has styrofoam floats.

Robert near Kowaliga.

I would love to tow it over to my place near Real Island.

will the power company give you a permit for it. a similar thing floated up to my waterfront and I tied it up and used it as a swim float. About a month later the APCO guy told me I could not have it because they would not permit it due to the use of styrofoam.

I untied it and it floated away.

I had one that I wanted to get rid of. I just had to burn it. Ripped it apart, piled it up and had a bon fire. Best to wait till the water goes back down and remember to get a burn permit.

And BTW, the styrofoam emits thick black smoke and it stinks. But it doesn't take long and it'll be gone.

Email me at rhuffaker at yahoo dot com. I also have a 4x6 trailer that I want to dispose of too. If you want that, let me know. It could use some TLC.

If you don't give it away here, I'd check with the local dock bulders too - they will probably take it off your hands.

Funny reminder this! My father built a 16' square floating concrete pier in the late 60's. It lasted a pretty long time until mid 90's, but was so freakin' hot you could fry stuff on it. You could not stand on it without water, towel or vest under your feet in the summer. Part of it cracked and had to be cut loose, eventually the whole thing had to go. Getting THAT hauled off was a treat!

I'd stick with wood!

All the floating docks in my neighborhood float on styrofoam. I take it the permitting is somehow grandfathered and applies to new items? What does a new floating dock permissibly use for flotation? (I go way back to the oil-drum era...)

Old Styrofoam grandfathered. But cannot be replaced with such if repairs are needed.

New requirement encased or closed cell (extruded) expanded polystyrene of good quality and manufactured for marine use - See Link below fro example product.

Would be willing to bet APCo would not allow the transfer of an old styrofoam dock from one owner to the next as the current shoreline regs state - "With regard to the construction of and remodeling of floating structures, flotation shall be encased or closed cell (extruded) expanded polystyrene of good quality and manufactured for marine use which will not become waterlogged or sink when punctured. All beaded foam material being replaced shall be removed from the reservoir and properly disposed of."
