My brother-in-law used to be a mate on a schooner that sailed from Key West to Ft. Lauderdale on a regular basis. He and I were near Kowliga last weekend. A pontoon boat passed by sporting no less than four fenders hanging from it. His remark was telling: "Jed Clamplett has done bought himself a pontoon boat."

We've had this discussion before. Fenders, or "bumpers" as they are denominated locally, should be kept inside the boat when the boat is underway. "Bumpers" flopping on the outside of a boat while underway indicate that the operator knows diddly squat about proper boat handling.

Saw a pontoon up here the other day that had the mermaid fenders/bumpers or my personal favorite "doohickies". Now what good would it be to have those lovely's inside the boat?

I usually leave mine hanging outside only because I seldom go very far and lets face it, pontoons ain't built for speed. On the Searay, they get stowed before leaving the pier.

I remember the "what are they called" thread. Good times!

Peace,
<><

Who gives a crap about "Proper boat handling". If grandpa want to drive the pontoon down the lake with his fenders out thats his preference. Screw what others think, thats your petpeeve to deal with!

Rather than tie my fenders to the top rail, which is unsightly and uses more rope, I tie them lower, closer to the waterline. Because they are tied so low, there is not enough rope to lift them all the way into the boat. Are you saying that because I don't untie them every time I drive my boat that I am some sort of hillbilly?

Don't denigrate others just because they figured out a better way to do something.

We have a very nice pontoon boat (Harris Floatboat) and we leave them hanging over sometimes. I can guarentee you i can handle a boat as good as almost anyone on the lake.

In the spirit of correctness whether twisted or braided when it's on a boat it is not a rope it is a line. LOL.

Your friend needs to get a life. I have a lot more problem with pontoon boats running docking lights at night ruining my night vision or boats not giving the me the right of way than whether they have their fenders out or not.

I've always left my bumders (thats a blend) hanging over the side of my Crest because it was a pain to untie the lines. The other day I installed these locking eyes to the front deck and shortened the ropes and knots. Know I can easily reach over, pull them in and store them inside the rails while underway. Keeps the wife and kid from getting splashed. They cost 16 bucks at West Marine and were an easy install for anyone interested.

I was waiting on your reply. It takes me back to a more simple and fun time on the forum. I have posted only a few times since the old "bumper" days.

I say call em what ever you feel like calling them but technically speaking fenders are the fat juicy rubber things you tie to your boat and bumpers are the rubber things that you attach to your dock. If you get it wrong at the coast they will harrass you! lol
