My father passed away two weeks ago. We received an American flag ( 4 x8 for his military service. Does anyone know of a facility on/around the lake that needs a flag? I understand the purchase theat they are quiet expensive.

I know that the Girls Scout of America love the donation of a flag. They will honor it and when it is time for disposal, they will dispose of it with a proper ceremony. Contact the local GSA headquarters. I know they have a location in Hoover AL on Hwy 280 behind the Wendy's restaurant. Hope that helps!

I purchased a display case for my Father's flag and it sits in a place of honor, ALWAYS. Give it away? You couldn't TAKE it away from me!

When I'm dust in the wind and my children even think of givin away my flag I'll haunt them until I see them again then beat the livin shut out of them! Even if you hated your father, who could be the only reason I could think of for thinking of giving away his flag. You should not do this, hide it in a special place and leave it, someday you will see it again and it may mean something then that it does not mean now, but do not I repeat do not give that flag away!

Obviously folks have different feelings about the American flag. Seems this person would like to see it proudly displayed on a pole. I have no issue with that. It is a great symbol. Let it fly freely if you wish!!!!!!

...person knows that the Star Spangled banner simply flying somewhere is a great honor.
And maybe that will honor his father just as much as one in a case sitting on a shelf.
Just maybe...before you go off next time, open your mind a little.
Not saying what I'd do in the same situation...but I'm just thinking a little.

Bluecreeker, you should know by now that freedom of expression-- and any number of freedoms that people fought and died for under that same flag-- are not allowed by a certain vocal segment of lakemartin.com.
I agree with you: flying that flag ANYWHERE would be a greater honor than stuffing it in a box and hiding it in a closet. But, like I said, we're not allowed to have differing opinions here.

I gave my opinion, as did everyone else. Now you see who the real troublemakers are. I guess they really don't see how stupid they look. So I guess saying why I think and not putting anyone else down for their opinion does not freakin matter, you butholes are going to post those comments out there to make it appear I did something to flame this post and you are dead wrong. I was right to just stay away from this forum as have many others, Bruce will read this since it will receive the dreaded flame for it's honesty and he should know a lot of folks are no longer coming here to read this trash, thus not seeing his ads. Many times I disagree with post I read. When I do, I will usually read forum rule #1 before I respond. In doing so, I am reminded to not use words such as "you" but rather use "I" because in doing so, I am not insulting or attacking anyone but rather stating my belief. you walk in their shoes! I have been to many a ceremony where a flag was given in honor of a fallen soldier or retired member of our force. We have shed tears, cheers, and read about the lives of many people and have taught a young group of girls the spirit of being an American. You have the RIGHT to cast judgment of another persons expression of their love, experiences, knowledge and right or freedom of expression because you are from America. I once heard of a woman that turned a flag she was given upon her husbands death into a coat. A man came up and JUDGED her because she was WEARing an American flag. She stated that is was the only was she felt that he was as close to her heart as possible. Think about it! Do you know what is going on in someone's head? The question is do you think enough about others feelings to truly care? May your father rest in peace!

I have walked in those shoes. I'm medically retired from the Army infantry and feel the flag from a fallen love one should be honored by being placed in a glass case an displayed in your home somewhere where it can be see by all.

Agree, so almost50, please keep the flag, and the best way to honor your Father would be to keep it in the family and fly it on special occasions, trust me if you give it away you will regret it, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong, I was wrong once last year but don’t remember what I was wrong about.

Wow! Did not expect so many comments. I don't see why I am commenting, but due to some of the negative coments I will.
My father lived a great life. He was financially strong, he always gave to non-profit facilities, helped the homeless and always gave to those who were less fortunate than he.
He asked donations be made to the humane society instead of flowers when he died. Donations most likely were several thousand dollars. He was caring not only with people but also to our unfortunate and abused animals.
If his flag could save someone money, ie: Childrens Harbor, and save them $600.00 in a future flag purchase, he would be pleased to do it. That is what he represented and what he would want.
It is not COLD. It is a decent thing to do. It is NO DIFFERENT than donating his clothing to a chartible organization versus what idiot said to "hold on to it forever".....

A VERY nice, embroided flag is about 20 bucks. For it to be a $600 flag it would have to be larger than MOST places could fly, like the one at 280 and 63 in Alex City. Funeral flags are not that expensive, if it was funeral homes wuold NOT give them to every Vet.
It is your flag, do with it as you wish.
