Water is seeping slowly into my Green Monster tripping the Ground Fault. What type of sealant should I be using?

Thanks

I would just grab some marine sealant from a West Marine or similar shop. I think that should work!!!

i think greenmonster uses an epoxy that is similar to the epoxy that auto manufacturers use to encase computer components in so you can't repair your own auto computer, or modify it.

monster lights solder the leads to the bulb and then pour the epoxy into a pvc fitting that surrounds the base of the bulb.

i would take the light back to green monster, it should be a warranty issue

He didn't buy it from Ronnie (Green Monster) he is just using that name. He will spend more trying to make his own than if he just bought it from Ronnie. I have had 4 Green Monster Fishing Lights on my pier for 2 years now. They are all still working fine. I also have a fish feeder that Ronnie sold me that is solar powered and it is working great. I am having to change all my fishing gear to salt water gear, freah water rods and reels won't land the fish I am hooking now.

LakerLady,

Your probably exactly right but, I am semi-retired and it sure makes for fun to get out and do a little something to be productive everyday. I just enjoy having projects around the house and talking with others to see what novel ideas they have come up with...Bet your place is beautiful with 4 GreenMonsters out there in the lake.

Have a great Day!

3M makes a marine sealant called 5200. I swear by it. It is designed for use below the water line and they mean it. It comes in a blue and white caulk tube. West Marine carries it.

I went all out - WalMart has a 100% silicone caulk for around $2.00 for a 10oz (about) tube for a caulk gun - probably been underwater about 3 months, and no problems yet.

I would stay away from silicone sealant. I think your best bet would be a two part epoxy. You can get some at Home Depot.

Let's see some pics of home-grown green lights!

The problem you have with silicone is that as it dries and hardens it shrinks a little bit allowing water to get into those recessed areas around the bulb. I would not recommend any commercial two part epoxies because most of these contain some amount of silicone. Also, the commercial epoxies may say they work for any type of water proofing job but they are designed to be used in a manner where the epoxy covers the desired area COMPLETELY ENCASING it( all around it, 360* with no open ends that it can pull away from as it will when only partially covering a light bulb). To get an epoxy that will not shrink during the drying process you are more than likely going to have to pay a lot more than you would for a small amount of commercial epoxy. I would also think that you would not be able to obtain any from a commercial store. That seems like a very specialized product with limited uses. Usually you can only get products like that from the manufacturer of that particular product or an industrial sales representative business that deals in selling the products of industrial product manufacturers for the manufacturers. I could keep going but the bottom line is that unless you really want to spend a lot of time researching products and contacting manufacturers to find the right product and then run the risk of having to pay more money than you are willing to for just your one or two personal lights, and run the risk of killing yourself or others (You are talking about a lot of electricity and water in very close proximity to one another) you should just stop what you are doing and let someone who has done the research and testing handle making them.
