Where are the marine police when you need them!! This is just up their alley for giving a ticket.

the flags need better respect than what they are getting.

Why would they receive a ticket? Knocking the Marine Police like that is rather unfair. All they try to do is protect fools from injuring themselves and keep fools from injuring you. Seems like a noble thing to do for the money they earn.

I don't like the disrespect but do you really think that a ticket would pass constitutional muster when the Supreme Court let hippies off the hook on grounds of political statement free speech for burning the flag, wiping their butts with the flag and all other sorts of desecration.

While it looks as if their intentions were the best, their ignorance overwhelms the expression.

On a somewhat related note, it irritates me immensely to see the flag at half-mast upon the death of someone who doesn't warrant lowering the flag. Our legislators are the absolute worst at forgetting when and why the flag is lowered.

That is very disgraceful. However, some people just don't get the signifigance of the flag and Independance Day. It's just another get drunk and pass out holiday for some.

And who died that did not deserve a lowered flag?

May 15 — Peace Officers Memorial Day: half-staff from sunrise to sunset.
Last Monday in May — Memorial Day: the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon.
September 11 — Patriot Day: half-staff from sunrise to sunset
December 7 — National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day: half-staff from sunrise to sunset.
Upon reliable information that a past or present President, Vice-President, Chief Justice, or Speaker of the House has died.
Upon proclamation from the President or your state's governor.

I've seen the flag at Patriot Point lowered when well-known locals die. While they certainly deserve our respect, lowering the flag to half staff when it is not warranted is disrespectful to the flag.

I guess there is the Law, and it should be respected. On the other hand, I have no problem with a local area showing it's respect and honor for one of its own by lowering their flags. I know I'd much rather see that than seeing our flag desecrated under the name of the first ammendment and free speach.

The local area should lower their local flag, not the flag of our country. There is specific protocol as to when the flag should be lowered to half staff. To do so any other time shows tremendous ignorance and/or disprespect, no matter what the intention. Those folks in the boat don't know any better, because no one ever taught them what the flag means, and why it should always be treated with the greatest respect.

If you wouldn't die for that flag (which implies you fully understand what it means), then you probably don't really care if it gets lowered or not.

And therein is a fine illustration of where our country came from, and where we are going.

Maybe the below link will help.

Two of my pet peeves is flying "The Flag" at night without it having a light on it (otherwise it should be lowered and folded). and the use of "The Flag" as a come on at car dealerships and other similar places (commercial use of "The Flag")..

I posted the below link to the Forum several years ago when there was a discussion of flying "The Flag" on automobiles where it got shredded or blown off and into the ditches and gutters of our byways.

I also detest the latest Mountain Dew commercial using the National Anthem in the back ground for the giant commercial tug of war.

"In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. "

Assuming then the decedent meets these rather broad criteria, then, it's up to the Governor.

That's from Title 36 USC.

If there is a proper proclamation, then it would be disrespectful NOT to lower it. If there is no proclamation, then it is disrespectful TO lower it.

I don't suppose it really matters anymore, its just something that bothers me personally. This country has lost its understanding of what it is, and why it is.

What is it they say?

Oh yeah....

"You can't stop change, so why waste time trying."

.....sigh....

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anyway to stop the current 'agent of change' AKA the obomamessiah. Soon we will be pining for the days when flag ettiquite was all we had to be concerned about.

Too true - if that change happens, those of us still working will have far less discretionary funds to spend on our favorite activities (almost anything on the lake) because of more income redistribution, and for medical care we will have to go to ……uh……sorry, Michael Moore says Cuba.

You don't know me from Adam. 33 months combat time in Nam, 68-72. So yeah, I've fought under that flag and it does mean a great deal to me.
I just don't care to get wrapped up in a bunch of legalese.
Something else I fought for, we each can have and express our opinion.
