Ok, last week around the 11th of July we get noticification Alabama Power would release only the minimum flow from Lake Martin. Their website for water release today shows schedules for up to 4 units running at Martin Dam. That is not minimum flow. That is alot of water over the dam. Anyone know why they changed their mind?

I'm not implying that you are critizing Alabama Power, but I really wish people could just be happy with what we have.

Last year it was "the end of lake martin", "the lake will NEVER reach full pool again".

They have done a dam good job manage the water flow from the dam this year.

Thank you Alabama Power.

You got that right. I didn't think there was any way it would ever be 489 when the summer started this year. At the rate it is dropping right now we will still have much more water than we had at the end of last summer.

I would think the upper 90s and 100 degree weather would have a lot to do with the change in schedule. Lots of air conditioners running wide open 24/7 right now.

I beg to differ. Look at the water level curve for 2006. The drought was worse then than we are experiencing right now, and the levels held up better then. I think that Alabama Power is just truing to make up for allthe coal they had to burn last year.

Except for krc, you guys missed the entire point. Doesn't really surprise me based on seeing other posts. Anyway, for those who didn't understand the point, Alabama Power said they would not exceed minimum flow due to the lack of rain. Simple enough!

I am happy for the level of water we have. I know the one to thank is not Alabama Power. They did help, however, by plugging early when we had some water falling. For that I am grateful. They do not have me on the notification list of excharge plans, so I will have to defer to you on that one. If they are releasing more than they should, then shame on them, and pray for more rain.

While, I am not one of the ones that give Alabama much credit for the water we have now, I do accept the fact that it is their dam and they can generate whenever they wish. In my book, the only reason they plugged the dam early was because of public pressure. I give HOBO a lot of credit, but I realize many of you don’t. Whoever you want to give the credit, AP caught a lot of flack last year because Lake Martin was the only lake in their system that did not plug early (2007 mind you). Without the public outcry, I don’t think Alabama Power gives a rip about what lake homeowners or boaters think about water levels. Let me add, I do know the reason the lake was built. Just my two cents.

They do give a rip about what boat and property owners think. Why else would they mail out letters informing us of conditions and their plans to manage the system.

That is true. Today I got a flyer in the mail announcing APCO's plan to minimize discharges due to the return of river inflow levels to last year's drought affected levels. That being said the APCO website indicates 4 turbines operating from 4-6 pm on Tuesday, July 22 and 3 turbines operating from 3-5 pm on Wednesday, July 23.

Stop complaining...take a look at our beautiful lake and then take a look at Lake Lanier north of Atlanta (down 16 FT.) or Lake Hartwell on the Ga/SC border (down 12 ft.)

The purpose of the Lake Martin Dam is not to float you boat, or for recreation. That`s a plus. Count your blessings .

The ACPCo Notice stated they were reducing the downstream flows to the minimum level.

The notice did not specifically what reservoirs would provide what amount of water to the minimum down stream requirements.

So based on the wording of the notice if APCo wanted to take all the minimum from Martin they could.

So all the APCo Notice is really saying is they are going to try to minimize the Alabama River downstream flow and did not make a commitment as to which reservoirs would provide what percentage of the downstream flow into the Alabama. As they really cannot determine such as to many unknown factors by reservoir --- such as rainfall across the respective watersheds, etc.

Lets just hope they manage all reservoirs equally and that Martin does not get stuck dropping its lake level 2 or 3 feet or something while the others remain constant.

"Minimum" does not mean "none." (Not directed at you, Mav, I know you know the difference.)

Sure they care about what certain lake homeowners think. Namely homeowners who are Alabama Power executives, the Governor, etc.
