God Bless America!

I remember when the fighter jets (don't know what they were, F15s?) used to practice runs towards the dam. They'd come in around Willow Point at about 1000 feet, slow down and drop to about 500 feet and "strafe" the dam, then hit the afterburners and shoot straight up with a roar that shook the entire lake. Used to be the 4th Saturday of every month, and we would wait for it like Christmas!

I live in the area where the C130 was spotted last week. Its a regular occurrence here, as we are obviously directly in their pattern. We also get several helicopters as well. My advice is to get used to it because they have been flying here forever, and I suspect/hope they will be forever more. Seeing/hearing/feeling them flying by is one of my fondest memories of the lake, and makes my heart pound with pride every time I see them.

If it inconveniences your life that our military likes to stay prepared, and in accomplishing that practices their skills over "your lake," keep in mind that France Canada are beautiful countries, and their "Air Forces" are little more than token gestures.

We were at the lake one night a few years back and heard the strangest "screaming" noise. The dishes in the cabin were even rattling. We ran outside to see a C5 Galaxy low altitude flyover. The jet powered C5 is substantially bigger than the C130. AWESOME!!!

I just didn't know what or who it was and it scared 9 children. I have no problem with it. We've only been on this side of the lake since Oct 2005 and this was a first for us. The weekend of the 4th we saw some jets taking off and landing at Willow Point and they were low and big as well.

Like I said earlier today, I'm not complaining, I'm a good person and glad what the military does for us. I don't appreciate anyone telling me to move somewhere else. I was simply asking a question if anyone knew who it was.

Off my soap box.

I didn't see it as complaining....

Just give Maxwell a call and voice your concerns 334 953-1110. I remember he first time a pair of F-4's out of Birmingham were performing recon passes over Blue Creek. Scared us to DEATH!!!!

Over the last few years as our shoreline has changed from "Russell Cabin" places to $Million dollar "retreat" communities, I have been waiting for traffic at Willow Point Air to increase likewise. I have assumed that those of us who can afford such lake homes as second homes will also want to arrive at the lake via private planes, including small jets. Has not happened as far as I can detect.
You see, the SW approach leg extends almost over Veasey's Marina, and thus, over my roof. Has not happened yet. If your place is in the Northern end of Big Kowaliga Creek, Parker Creek, the Narrows, you are gonna' see/hear approaches at WP, low and slow.

I'm no expert, but I think there is some fundamental of aeronautics that requires planes to be low when taking off or landing, and it is especially noticeable around airports. They really should have disclosed the proximity of the airport before you bought your home.

And that line you typed about "who do we complain to?" probably confused me into thinking you were complaining.

But don't take it personally. A lot of people share your attitude about the lake. It just struck me as ironic that someone "isn't complaining" about the military practicing over "their" property. After all, it is that very military that provides and protects your ability to imagine that you own the lake.

The lake has a long history with the military (primarily the Air Force and the National Guard). It is a heritage that makes the lake MORE special, and the day they stop practicing over our water will be a very sad day indeed, for one reason or another.

I say let them fly, whenever and wherever they want.

Catherine,

Love your posts here but I must say when I first saw your name I thought you would blame the low flying airplanes on Russell Lands.

Cheers,

I have flown into the Willow Point airport on several occasions and while it probably has the length for a small business jet it surely will not accomodate a big jet. I have never seen a jet parked at the facility. I live across the lake from you and the C-130's have been more active recently than in the last 3 years. We enjoy seeing them and they really are not as low as they look.

Now if Mickey flies over your house in his flying parachute that will scare the kids' dogs and cats!!!!!!!

Not complaining:
"If we wanted to complain, who would we complain too?"
"It was really loud."
"That kind of practice should not be over populated areas."
"I just have a problem with a plane that low"
"If they need to practice that low, go somewhere with no houses."

I sure would hate to have to listen to you guys when you complain.

Any idea who owns/flies the yellow seaplane I see almost every weekend near the Willow Point Airport/Oakachoy area? Only onetime I saw it land on the water somewhere down near Oakachoy Creek. It was too far away by then to let me see what was happening.

It's a shame Ben Russell is no longer flying. His aerobatics would really give the Forum something to talk about.

Back in the late 70's the dam area was a turning point for the Navy fighters out of Pensacola. It was not unusual for them to do flyby's at 1000 feet or less. The last few years seem to have been mostly the C130's out of Maxwell using the low altitude approaches for drop practice for the Mideast. Every now and then the guys out of Fort Rucker will also come this far north. It takes me back to 68 when the sound of low flyers was very welcome 13000 miles from here.

There are 2 seaplanes, 1 solid yellow and 1 white and orange, plus 1 black helo, all acroos from Parker creek Marina. Fun to watch them shoot landings up and down Parker Creek

I have jumped out of my skin quite a few times when a sudden roar came close over my head. I then turn my head up and smile. My son made it home safe and sound from deployment. Some of his friends haven't. We don't appreciate our freedom near enough. Teach your children why those honorable guys are out there training. It's so they don't have to be fighting a war over your head in your own country. Next time they won't be scared, they will be proud. Sorry, I don't mean to sound "preachy" but when you hear and see what the children in those war torn countries endure every day it makes you more aware of the things we take for granted here in the USA.

I have heard stories from retired Air Force types of flying low enough over the Kowaliga basin to drag their tails in the water, but those stories are probably just BS since it would be mighty hard to get the tail of a C-130 in the water. I don't doubt that pilots may sometimes try to get pretty low over the lake, just not low enough to get their planes wet.
Actually, Lake Martin is not the only lake to be used as a training area. Not by a long shot. I remember visiting my in-laws who live on a small (under 500 acres) lake in the boondocks of middle Georgia, and once seeing two S-3 Vikings (Navy anitsubmarine planes, probably from the Naval Air Station north of Atlanta)make practice bomb runs on the lake. I felt a whole lot safer knowing that the Navy was on the lookout for enemy subs in that puddle. I am told that they get buzzed all of the time by some very large and loud planes, especially at night.

I am going to have to agree with Catherine on this one.

If you would like the U.S. military to stop flying practice missions over the lake I'm sure we could arrange another country to fly over. Though it may be a bit louder with the bombs and everything going off. However, the lake level may go down a bit.
Maybe we sould ban the birds from chirping in the morning too...oh yeah I'm sure the nuclear winter will take care of them too...problem solved!
