Not lake related being the reason why it's here... but it's interesting how we are "stepping back" to a fuel sources made obsolete by coal in the late 1800's.

Georgia Power Seeks Approval for Coal Plant Conversion to Biomass
ATLANTA, Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Power today asked the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for approval to convert coal-fueled Plant Mitchell to renewable wood biomass.

Upon conversion, Plant Mitchell - near Albany - would be capable of producing
96 megawatts of renewable energy - or enough electricity to power 60,000 homes. The plant would have lower emissions, and would be one of the largest wood biomass plants in the United States. It would also have lower fuel and operating costs when compared to continued operation using coal, thereby making the plant more cost-effective for customers.
Surplus wood fuel for Plant Mitchell would come from suppliers operating within an approximately 100-mile radius of the plant.
"Georgia Power is taking an important step toward continued diversification of its fuel sources and making renewable energy more affordable for customers," said Mike Garrett, Georgia Power president and CEO. "By converting Plant Mitchell to biomass, we hope to not only help grow the renewable resource base in Georgia but also to expand the market for renewable energy credits, which ultimately will foster additional renewable energy development."
Renewable energy credits are created when a renewable energy facility generates electricity or uses renewable fuel. The PSC is expected to rule on the proposal to convert Plant Mitchell to biomass by spring of 2009. Retrofit construction would begin by spring of 2011 and the biomass plant would likely begin operations in June 2012.
Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the nation's largest generators of electricity. The company is an investor-owned, tax-paying utility with rates well below the national average. Georgia Power serves 2.3 million customers in all but four of Georgia's 159 counties.

Fuel Sources besides oil??
I remember the long lines at the pump in the 70"s when OPEC cut our supply. And gas skyrocketed from something like 60 cents to 70 cents per gallon (don't remember exactly). There was an outcry for alternatives other than petrochemical, and there were a number offered. None really succeeded in freeing us, even slightly, from the MiddleEast tit.
Here we are 30+ years later, and we are still sucking, more every day, and no end in sight, and not much effort otherwise.
I hate it, hate it. That ain't the way we got to where we are, that is, kicked back with a brew on the deck, wondering what the Bulldogs are gonna' do this year, not worrying that there is a storm brewing right in your face.......

I saw were one country in South America (I think is was Brazil) declared this year that is was self sufficent as far as outside enery was concerned. In the 70's when the price skyrocketed they started working toward useing Ethanol and use the oil they pump for uses that can only be made from oil. They (the oil companies) told us in the 70's that gas would have to be $2.50 a gallon for it to be feasible so they kept the price down so that we would not do any research and put them out of business. We as a nation should have done something because we all knew these days would come but Rep. &, Dem. administrations and the public all did nothing. We have no one to blame but ourselves for letting foreign countries and big business do it to us.

It is a shame the US has not invested in alternative fuels. All these years of sending U.S. dollars to the Middle East has allowed them to position themselves as a financial power. Here we sit in debt funding a war to buy more of their oily stuff... Have you seen the investments the UAE is making in aviation and maritime ports? They of course are not worried about alternative fuels... Why would they be?

The UAE is culturally the most "Western" of the Middle Eastern countries. Much of Dubai World was the vision of Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem. I guess you have to give the guy credit of reinvesting the UAE money for the betterment of his country... The same kind of money the ruling Saudi families hoarded for themselves.
Dubai World was the company that won and lost the U.S. port management contract, if you remember that controversial news topic.

I hate to tell you this but we have been spending between $2-$3 per gallon for gas since the early 1900s. We have another problem and its not alternative energy.
