I posted this on the AlexCityOutlook Forum also...

How much do you pay for Charter Cable? Be specific please.

On the back of your invoice it will detail billing.

Biggest Value Package - one cable box = $81.99
High Speed Internet - we own our modem = $41.99

Total --Tax included--------------------------------$131.76

I have basic cable and HD. Have the cheapest highspeed internet. the bill is between $35 and $40. I don't know why it is not always the same, and I don't care. Based on what I have heard others say, I think I am probably screwing them.

I have a Netflix account less than ten dollars and a ROKU that was free for beta testing. This lets you stream any of 10.000 movies on demand. Using highspeed internet. They are not the latest releases but you can get the latest from netflix on blueray dvd with this account.

If you have an xbox 360 there is a hack that will permit you to stream from a netflix account. Soon microsoft will redo the dashboard so you don't have to hack.

In addition, I always let at least one router open so that if someone wants to steal some broadband they can.

Cable Modem Internet Only

3meg Preview Thru 12/07 -- 54.99
Internet Modem Lease ------- 3.00
Taxes --------------------------------- .06
Total ----------------------------- $58.05

I don't usually read the bill closely but the thing that surprised me is the "3meg Preview"... I wonder what that means. They'll probably go up in price at the first of the year and say they discontinued the 3meg package (used similar trick before). The average person is not going to be able to tell the difference between 3meg and 6meg or even 9meg because most web files are so small... They are using faster speed offerings to justify pricing hikes.

I called to complain about the price hike and told them I didn't want the 5meg.. They then told me all they offered now was the 5meg.

Well what they said is a lie, because I have the 3meg bill to prove it. But as I said in a post a few weeks ago, they went up on my bill years ago saying the 384k service was no longer available. I never called to complain... A cable installer told me that the speed thing was a gimmick and that they did not regulate any of their speeds on individual accounts anyway. I've never run any tests, but that would have been interesting to do back then. Next time at the lake I'll run it and see if I get more than 3meg.

I must say that I took a different approach and went with DishNetwork, because Charter Cable wanted $7,000 to run cable to the house (no, I didn't make a mistake in that figure). The DishNetwork picture is great, and so is the selection of channels. The per month cost is comparable to Charter, and there is no down time due to people running into telephone poles or trees falling across lines.
