Here is a question for someone including the MP if you know the answer:
If the center line length of a boat is 30'6" does that constitute the length or do you have to add up the overall length including pulpit, anchor, or swim platform? I have a boat in mind... the GradyWhite 305 that falls in this category.

Who cares what the law is? If you have the money to buy that boat then you have the money to just pay the tickets.

Agree, there is a little body of water called the Gulf of Mexico for those size boats. We don't need any more on Lake Martin.

From what I have read the boat is measured from the center line of the bow to stern excluding anchors, swim platforms, motors, etc.

But to be safe I would check with DCNR.

That's the way I feel too. Nothing personal against the people that have the big boats, but just beacuse you have the money to buy any size boat you want shouldn't mean you can put it any where you want. This is a big body of water but I feel like there has got to be a limit to what size boat is allowed here. I don't really have a problem with the big speed boats it's the big cabin cruiser type boats that bother me. They cruise along at 10-20 mph and make waves that can swamp or even possibly turnover a "normal" average sized lake boat. I have a heavy 21' bowrider, which by todays standards is not very big, and there are times that I don't feel very safe in it. I can't imagine what some of the people with smaller boats than mine feel like out there on the open water when lots of the big boats are cruising around.

I certainly agree with boat size and I hate to see the big boats cruise by at 20 and their wake wash out my seawall. I especially hate the real loud boats regardless of speed and size. Don't like them and they should be banned too. But to get an intelligent answer sometimes on this forum is almost impossible with one exception in this case so far.

That is a nice boat, but I'm always curious when I see these purpose-built boats running around Lake Martin; what exactly are you getting that for, then damning it to life on an inland lake?

Because it is the United States Of America......Please remember that young men and women are dying in the desert so everyone here has the right to buy or worship or live anywhere they wish. You people that are chiming in with your 2 cents worth on what you do or don't think should be here should look at the big picture. What happens if something you own is next. There are already laws that state any damage that someone does to your boat or property with their wake is their responsibility. Only problem is you have to catch them or film them. There are also noise restrictions that the MP enforce. Why do we need more laws that basically state the same thing that the existing laws already say. Don't be surprised to see a ban on anything that is 2 stroke (mixes gas and oil together) coming soon. They are very bad for the environment. How will you feel if you have a 2 stroke boat and a few jet skis and they are now banned. All I'm saying is just cause it doesn't affect you, the big picture is it affects someone and you may be next. And by the way, If you don't know the correct answer to a question posted here and can not back it up with a link to prove your answer, just don't bother to answer with what you think.

I dont have a 305 but I can speak for loving the ride and easy maintanance of a Grady White type boat. Just bought my new GW last year and it gives you the unbelievable freedom of standing up along with your passangers and easy cleanup at the end of the day. Just hose it out and you're done. Not to mention the rougher the water, the better the ride. As the former owner of super nice bowriders, the lake is getting much rougher than it used to be 10 yrs ago so a sharp v hull helps with the ride quality, give one a try and you'll be hooked for life! All boats have a purpose for different needs, glad there is a great variety out there to choose from : )

Copied from DCNR website:

recreational vessels over 30 ft-6 inches in length, as determined by the straight line distance between the ends of the boat, excluding bowsprits, outboard motor brackets, rudders, or other attachments

Quoting you... "I can't imagine what some of the people with smaller boats than mine feel like out there on the open water when lots of the big boats are cruising around."

When was the last time you seen lots of the big boats cruising around, and how frequently is that occurance? How about creating a law that doesn't address actual problems versus opinions... Wait a minute, I almost forgot, they did two years ago.

It's going to be a terrible day when MP are stopping someone to measure the length of their boat when some drunken fool blows by them on a "legal" boat and plows into people swimming, dock, or some other accident. I know of 3 deaths on Lake Martin since this law was passed, and none of the boats in question were longer than 23 feet. I have also either read about drug busts, witnessed DUIs, fights etc. from persons not driving these outlawed boats. There has been property damage during at least one of these situations that is documented, I haven't seen a single documented case of a cruiser causing property damage. Not that is doesn't happen, because some people do not understand the difference between displacment and planing. I hate it when cruisers "plow" too, why not consider that "reckless driving" and enforce it? Either cause no wake, or operate at plane speed... sounds good to me.

"And by the way, If you don't know the correct answer to a question posted here and can not back it up with a link to prove your answer, just don't bother to answer with what you think."-- You mean, don't do exactly what YOU just did?

In my opinion-- which I am either allowed to give because young men are dying in the desert, or not allowed to give because it does not conform to the standards that YOU wish to impose on everyone (not including you)-- what we are dealing with here is now a LAW. You might not like the law, but it is a law, and therefore needs to be enforced. If you think that this law is a bad thing, then don't even think about the consequences of "selective enforcement."

The separation by class has begun - you can count on having more bans, and maybe next time they will get you or me (18' bowrider). The bigger/faster boats have never bothered me - idiot operators on the other hand....

Well I couldn't resist commenting to this thread. I am sure thar the posting refering to the 305 Grady White are refering to my paticular boat. Obviously "Broke Point" has an issue with it. First of all it is a 300 Grady White... The 305 is an express where mine is a walk around. Now that we have identified it by it's proper title..let's clear the air.

Some of you had kind comments about my paticular boat and for that I thank you. For those of you that questioned why I would have it here...well there are a number of reasons. I would be glad to answer any paticular questions..Plus. If anybody would like to go for a ride...I would gladly take donations for fuel!!!

Islander - my comment was certainly intended as a compliment to the OP. That is a super nice boat. If it came across in any way that I was criticizing it, well, that's just wrong. My point was only that I would so be wanting to drag it to the coast every weekend!

And to 4thelake, I can only hope that he's not so looking for a fight he actually INTENDED his rant to be directed at my post and completely mischaracterized it based on whatever crap was in his head. What an idiot.
