I need an education lesson on satellite tv. Just sold a house where we used charter cable (internet and Vonage) and bought a house where the only thing available is satellite. We have never had satellite. The former owners had Directv. Called company today, mainly to ask questions about internet, was it available through them and so forth. The rep said I could not talk to their internet solutions group unless I signed up with Directv first. That ended the conversation for me. I want to know what my options are BEFORE I sign up for anything.
So, here is what I want (or think I want): TV (expanded channels), high speed internet that I preferably don't have to get through a land line, best possible price.

I have Dish Network for TV and I'm happy with the system; they have the least expensive options from my research. Ijust upgraded and now have 250 channels (some are music), local channels, and their HD gold package all for about $75 a month. I have 2 HD TV's, 2 standard TV's, and a DVR that works with 2 of the TV's. There are 2 receivers and each controls 2 TV's ( you can still watch different programing on all 4 sets). As for Internet, I don't think satellite is the way do go. I don't have it because I found better options. Check out DSL options or possibly something through your cell phone company. Satellite companies have marketing agreements with some DSL providers that can save you money.
BTW, If you know someone with Dish or DirectTV, both companies will give you and that person a bonus for the referral if you get a referral coupon before you sign up.

Satellite is not the best delivery for internet. If you can get DSL from AT&T you would do much better. I am assuming you cannot get cable internet. Satellite internet is costly, requires an extended contract and limits your download speed and bandwidth. Meaning if you visit lots of sites with pictures and videos you may use up your allotted bandwidth for the month. They will then slow your service until your usage equals out. Confusing I know but read all the small print.

If you go with DirecTV you will not get local stations. If you go with Dish you will get all the Montgomery stations. You can still get stan alone cable internet if Com-Link is available where you live. Otherwise you can go with DSL through AT&T (Bellsouth). I have DSL and it works great ... has never gone down and very fast at a lower cost.
Also with DISH their receivers work on two TV's allowing both to watch separate programs. This saves you money on receivers. They also have a great all HD package if you have a HD flat panel. It includes all the popular stations and they still throw in a bunch of non HD as well.
Lastly, Vontage will work fine with DSL, but AT&T has a package that would probably compete and you get phone and DSL. If you go with just DSL you can get it without a phone line, you just need to tell them that is what you want. DISH allows broadband hookups too that allow you to get on demand movies and programs .... very cool.

If DSL is available in your area you dont have to have a land line to get service. DirecTV and AT&T offer a package that will save you some cash. I had DirecTV before I moved to Auburn, and would give my left arm to have it back (no local channels in Auburn). The day they are available I'm taking our boxes to Charter with a smile on my face. Hope this helps.

One other thing .... you can order your DSL through DISH network as well and they will give you a package discount.

I lived in an area that did not have cable or dsl internet. First I had a oneway satellite systen where up link was dial up and down was via satelite.
I acquired a used twoway system so that I would not have to sign a long contract. I had my guys install it and I did the pointing with a laptop. It was adequate but not as good a cable. When cable became avialable, I went to it.
If you are in an area where only satellite will work, I will get my old system out and give it to you if you are interested.

I really do not care which is better. I have directtv and choose to receive the Birmingham local channels. If I had wanted I could have had the Montgomery local channels. I left charter in Birmingham years ago and could not be happier with the satellite tv.

Check out SKYPE. My father-in-law lives out of the country and it is a free video chat phone via your computer service. I would check into the wireless internet card service. This is offered by ATT which is also the same as the Direct TV? If you use ATT as your home service, you will receive an additional discount if you let them know. Call ATT instead of the contractor companies. They will give you the info on the Direct TV and the phone/internet info even though you wont get the info in reverse.

you certainly are sensitive. you may recall that you said you could not get local channels with Directtv. the other comments related to the discussion about charter and my endorsement of directtv versus your endorsement of Dish Network. However, i really don't care but we can meet and beat each other over the head with satellite dishes if you want.

In your original post, you do not say where you want service. At the Lake, at home in Atlanat, B'ham/ Montg./ Eclectic??? Makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE!! If there are not enough potential subscribers in the same area, nobody is gonna' spend the BUCKS to offer it. At Lake Martin, our subscriber density is a problem. Too thin. Not enough "Takers".
Clarify "WHERE" you are. From previous posts on this same subject, there are some pretty knowledgeable people watching that can give some pretty good advice.
