Yesterday while cleaning the boat my wife and I heard several gun shots. We could see some commotion down and across the lake. I grabbed my bionoculars to witness a golden retriver getting two geese out of the water and the dogs owner with his gun on his shoulder giving the dog it's orders. The guy shot from his yard into the lake at the birds. The lake is only about 100 yards wide and there are several houses on the other side of the lake from this guy.

Are geese in season? And I thought they had to be inflight and not sitting in the water to shoot them. I am certain that there are laws about shooting so close to homes.

Amazing.

The following identifies that 100 yards would be mush too close for comfort...

Also found this online...

It is ILLEGAL to:

25. Hunt within 100 yards of any dwelling without the permission of the owner or leasee or discharge a firearm while hunting so that any projectile strikes any dwelling or building used for human occupation, or any commercial vessel, without the permission of the owner or leasee. This does not apply to a landowner or member of his/her immediate family hunting on his/her own property provided that no projectile strikes the above property of another without the permission of the owner or leasee.

I don't know what the law says, but that sounds unsafe and irresponsible. For all the responsible, safe hunters there are out there, a few will always do something questionable.

pford is correct:

This season runs from Sept.1-15 with generous bag limits of five geese in most states. These hunts occur well before the arrival of migratory geese. The focus of these hunts is to target resident geese. Resident geese reside year round in areas where in large numbers they are often considered a nuisance for the damage they can cause. Early Canada goose season hunting is a tool to help manage populations of resident geese and at the same time provide another hunting opportunity for outdoorsmen.

However, he requires the proper licenses and stamps.

Man I wish I had known about the hunting season because I could have taken out my limit in one shot while they were using my floating dock as their restroom!

I would imagine that special season still would mean they should be flying and not swimming in the water or walking on a pier. I have done some Duck and Goose hunting in Arkansas and have never seen anybody shoot at one that wasn't flying.

If you did not see the shots fired, how do you know he shot "sitting" rather than flying geese?

Just so you do not take this the wrong way, I am not in favor of shooting birds near houses on the lake.

I agree about needing to find good, available, free food and if someone knows how to cook goose, please post a good recipe. I'm thinking about AIG. All the news about AIG and now all it means to me is Absolutely Incredible Goose.

Begin preparation by shopping with a 12 gauge with 6shot. After that, mix well with rope and brick making sure they are tied well. Begin marinating them by dropping the rope into the lake and leaving for about 12 weeks. Bring up rope and assess what is left. Deposit remaining chunks in area for coyotes to continue to marinating. Soon after that go to the grocery store and buy steak and chicken. Don't forget to retrieve rope and brick for next season. Hope this helps. Also good for snakes and armadillos.
