Subject:   Lights at the lake!
Date:   9/25/2008 8:45:54 PM

Sitting on the dock and watching the stars at night is delightful as there is very little backlight!. In most areas around Atlanta, the backlight from streetlights or outdoor home lights prevents the community from watching the beautiful night sky. While it is still easy to see the sky in some parts of the lake, wouldn't it be nice if all street lights had covers to push the light down? Wouldn't it be nice if outdoor home lights were low voltage and faced down? We could preserve the beautiful views!!!!!!!!! Before the lake gets too crowded and too full of street lamps, I believe we should consider doing what some Arizona cities have done. Eventually the economy will change and there will be more and more homes around the lake. Now is the time to place covers on street lights and preserve our ability to see the night sky. Thoughts?

Well, we could certainly start with Ridge Marina. For reasons that I cannot comprehend, those high intensity lights are monstrous overkill. But I do not expect Russell to make any changes since it's "good" for business. Why they cannot be turned down at some reasonable time at night is beyond me.

To answer your question, I currently live in Austin Texas and street lights are strictly managed. The housing area that I live has NO street lights and it is wonderful. Most of the city would seem under lit by most US city standards. Unfortunately, there is a perception of safety associated with street lights but it just ain't so. Having said that, most people have been conditioned to believe the street lights are good and they would fight any change to manage the amount of extraneous light in the area. Sad but true.

We agree completely. We bought at the end of a sparsly developed cove and there were no lights at night. Two lots were leased and homes built. One of the homes has so many outside lights I believe it is visable from space.
The street light in front of our home has been burnt out for four years and no one complains. Our feeling, you want bright lights, move to Vegas.
Progress is inevitable but the night is beautiful at the lake.

Excellent idea. There are several people in my slough with the mercury vapor lights on their piers for fishing. It ruins the ability to sit on the pier at night and enjoy the sky. I wish they would invest in a green monster. On those cold clear winter nights, the lake martin sky is amazing!

We also have a nice night view althoug one neighbor has a 24x7x365 stree light when they only visit occaisionally. All of my lights have switches and we use them as needed. I wish more would adopt this practise.

This is a subject dear to my heart!
when we put lights on our new boathouse, I ordered from
DarkStarryNights.com. They only sell lights which face down, have off switches, and are neighbor and wildlife friendly. Two lights that we purchased could be automatic "on at dusk' lights. However, we had our electrician bypass these qnd we switch on when needed and off when it is not.
I have wanted to broach this subject, but I was reluctant. Bully for you. If we could educate the builders, home owners, etc, the lake would be a more beautiful place.

Agree with that. Just had a new house built near me. Can't enjoy the lake at night for the glare from that light as well as the bounce off the water into my eyes.

Well where do we start? Is this something HOBOs can take on? Is it something that must be voted on by the community? Can this decision be made by the County Commisioners? City Councils? Is anyone out there familiar with the process other areas went through to preserve their quality of life withour excessive light? We have an opportunity to do something.

Go to Wal-Mart or ______________ (insert store of choice) and buy a pellet gun.... as we know most people are not full time residents. Seems like this would take care of it.

Crappy : )

(just outside of Nashville)

Why not just talk to all your neighbors about it. We bought on Manoy Creek in 2003 and was very surprised how many of our neighbors did not know their neighbors. Have a neighborhood get-together, barbecue, whatever and just talk about it. Might be surprised at the developements. Your neighbors just might be thinking the same as you. They just don't read the "forum".

I'm glad that was cleared up. Since the response was immediate, I misunderstood. Have a great day. I'm headed to the lake!

This is an international dark-skies organization which I am sure will advise us on a course to take to initiate a dark skies initiative at lake Martin

So darn many pier lights now that we have to sit with our backs to lights and face the woods(not the lake) because of such glare. Seeing the stars is almost impossible. I tried on Thursday night and gave up because of the high intense glare of so many pier lights and yard security lights.

Agree! Regulation is the point. Hate to talk about regulations but what happens in other parts or the lake affects us all. Kill the lights folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Russell must go along with the rest of us and ...............I like the idea of no regular street lights................another mission. Need help with this one,Loved the URL sent out.

I wish this topic had gotten this much support when it was brought up a few years back, but as I recall everyone who railed against streetlight overkill was called a "grumpy old man" (or woman) and told to get over it. Too bad, because back then it probably wasn't too late to do something about it. Also too bad is the way those "grumpy" folks decided to stop posting here. But I guess you can kick an old dog for only so long before he decides to go away.
