Understand that Colin Powell endorsed Obama today. I know a lot of people here have repeatedly stated that they have a lot of respect for Powell and in some cases would vote for him if he ran.
My question is this: What is the sigificance of his endorcement? Is there any?

I'll state my view in advance so I'm not trying to bait anyone. I don't think it is significant. Colin Powell is an American icon and a great military leader, but I think he's been out of the public eye too long now to be an opinion shaper.

I greatly appreciate and respect what he has done for our country. In my case, the endorsement means nothing to me. To the election, maybe. At this time of the cycle, it is a battle for the undecided that counts. So perhaps it will sway some points here and there.

It's a ploy to become significant agian. He obviuosly is posturing for a place in an O adminsistration. He has been insignificant for a long time now.

Any endorsment that comes at this late date is NOT made on ideology. The candidates ideologies were clear months ago. Why not come out in support then? Becasue it wasn't so evident that the one had a chance to win. Late endorsments are mostly an attempt to gain favor with the favored candidate. If he truly beleived in the one's ideology, he would have supported him all along.

I did find it strange that Obama said today that Colin Powell had been a behind the scene advisor all along. If he has been, then why has he not come out before now to say he endorsed Obama? It was a political that I think will have very littlie effect on peoples votes.

I listened to the interview yesterday morning. I don't know if it will sway any voters at this late date or not. I heard a radio commentary this morning that any voters undecided at this point probably won't choose based on any one person.

I was very interested in what he said about the Iraq war though. He was very careful not to diss George Bush (or his own decisions at the time), and when repeatedly asked if it was a mistake he would only say that 'based on the intelligence at the time' it was the right decision.

I'm glad that he stood up and answered honestly about the situation instead of using the standard line some do that the President and the Republicans lied to everyone.

As for whether or not he wants a place in the new administration, I wonder about that also.

I have a number of thoughts:

First, he was very quick to point out that it wasn't a race issue which makes me think he doth protest too much. Also, he was quoted some time ago as saying having a black President would be "electrifying". I suspect this had much more to do with it than he is willing to admit.

Second, if you look at Powell's speech at the 2000 or 2004 convention (can't remember which) about why he was a Republican it seems almost inconceivable for him to endorse Obama. He allegedly was for small government, low taxes, free markets and a strong national defense. For a Reagan Republican to suddenly be willing to jettison all those supposed core values makes me believe he doesn't really stand for what he professes to believe or is a run of the mill opportunist.

Third, Powell stated his reasons included the lurching to the right of the Republican party. I am sorry but McCain is not a lurch to the right. And he was praising and excusing Obama's lack of experience and his liberalism as far back as April (i.e., long before Palin was even on the radar screen). This seems to me to be a red herring of the first order and is more than a little disingenuous on his part.

Fourth, I find Powell's timing for the endorsement interesting to say the least. It isn't exactly a profile in courage to endorse Obama once it looks like he is going to win. To me this looks like an opportunistic politician jumping on board when victory appears all but assured.

Finally, I do think this will help Obama make the argument that there are conservatives in favor of him fooling some into believing that he is a moderate when he is a classical liberal. As of today, around 45% of undecided and Obama voters still have concerns about his qualifications and experience to be President. I think this has the potential to convince some that he is acceptable.

Obama camp just announced that Powell will have a place in the Obama administration.

He will make a great addition. I suspect he will be an advisor rather than an active member. Obama is trying to take advantage of the endorsement to bolster his campaign which makes sense. I am sure McCain would have done the same. Now, Obama needs to win.

A decorated general endorses a anti-military Marxist and not the pro-military american war hero? What have we become? If O was white, I can guarantee that Powell would have endorsed McCain. Pure opportunist and not someone I would rely on to advise me.

One has to wonder why anybody would vote for someone just because another person says they will vote that way. Same thing with celebrity endorsements - who cares? I've said I would vote for CP if he ran, but that doesn't mean I will vote for his endorsee.

I suspect Powell would fit well into an Obama administration because he is for affirmative action and abortion. He will only be an "advisor" because he wants to be able to distance himself from Obama if he proves to be the disaster that I believe he will be.

We should take his stars and his penison for this act of treason. I know where the one will make all his cuts. I know because he has told us over and over. It will come staight out of the millitary budget. And now biden is saying that we will be 'tested' in the first six months of the messiah's adiminsistration. Well itsn't that special.

But I thought the light was going to shime from on high, and the sky would open up and the whole world world woulld live in peace once the one is elected.

As an advisor, I wonder what he thinks of Obama's support of Odinga in Kenya, who after losing an election, yelled fraud and incited genocide of the Christians. I doubt that he'll get asked that question though, probably too racist to ask..............
