Yesterday afternoon my family was sitting on our lakeside porch in the Parker Creek area when we saw an eagle with a white head swoop down, grab a fish and fly down the lake. We've seen Golden Eagles before, but never a Bald Eagle. Has anyone else had any sightings?

All the time. There are at least 3 nesting pair on the lake and maybe more. The golden eagles you saw were most likely just juvenille bald eagles. Their head and tails don't go white till between 3 to 5 years. I made the same mistake years ago. There are nests at the rock, DARE park, and Wind Creek State park tha I know of. The conservationist may know of more, but they don't kiss and tell...lol.. Amazing to me that they pick the busiest areas to nest. I guess that increases their chances of eating the carion and trash that humans leave behind.

Wow! It truly was a fabulous sight. We all went down to the dock to see if we could get another glimpse, but we did not have any luck. I guess the eagle was relaxing somewhere enjoying some fresh Lake Martin sushi.

I have seen them several times already this year. I work at Parker Creek Marina. they are beautiful every fall and winter.

Hey Nascar! Thanks for all you help at the marina, we would not be able to get around without you. Just after we saw the eagle, there was a big group of ducks flying in the OPPOSITE direction, are ducks prey for the eagles?

I saw one near the dam about a month ago. It was circling but didn't dive.
Different wildlife topic... Last week, right in the middle of the big water across from the Dixie Sailing Club, we ran up on a deer - 8 point buck - swimming across the lake. That was a pretty ambitious crossing.

I dont know for sure, but I would bet that there is a nest up on that end of the lake too. I may come up there and look around someday. They are actually easier to spot from the air than the ground. Like I said, the folks that really know wont say, not in public anyway. They are protecting the birds.
Any time any of you are around Young's Island if you get in the habit of looking up you will see them more often than not. We were there one day and there were two groups of people across on the other island. We watched eagles soar for most ot the time we were there. The other folks never had a clue. I did everything short of cruising over to point them out to them. I think they thought we were crazy the way we kept pointing up. They had several kids we thought would enjoy them, but they never spotted them.

Several years ago, probably 5, a friend and I were trolling around in my little boat in the Parker Creek slough and a Bald Eagle soared over us and headed back into the woods. What a beautiful site. We got a return trip pass-by a litle while later. Gives you chills doesn't it!

We were down weekend before last and saw two. We were sitting in our boat enjoying the sun in the area between the Narrows and Veazey's and all of the sudden two very large birds started our direction. When the sun hit them just right you could see the white on their heads and tail. They were beautiful. They circled around directly over our boat and fairly low for several minutes. It was a sight to behold. We usually have binoculars but forgot them that day. Just our luck.
But they were low enough to get a really good look with the naked eye.

We also saw the pair of eagles Oct. 11th weekend, they were so high we could not see any white and assumed they were Golden Eagles. I'm so excited they are living in the Parker Creek area. Absolutely breathtaking to see the eagle fishing. May have to take out the canoe and Nikon to see if I can catch another glimpse and possibly a photo. Does anyone know if there is a particular time of day the eagles hunt for food?

Was at the Montgomery Zoo yesterday. Their eagle person was demonstrating a golden eagle. Incidentally, it was the older sister of Auburn's eagle that flies before games. Females weigh more than males and are typically larger. This one weighed about 11 pounds.
As mentioned above, he said we do not have golden eagles on Martin. He says these are most likely young bald eagles. The Zoo has two very large bald eagles. What regal birds up close, much larger than you would imagine.

deer crossing there are pretty common. In the winter, they cross there and to Chimney and Acapulco Rock Islands and all those islands in there. They cross over to eat the browse that hasn't been eaten by other animals all year long. They also used to do it to escape hunting pressure, but that was before The Ridge, when Dixie Hunting Club could hunt that whole point.

The Bald Eagle is a large bird, with a body length of 71–106 centimeters (28–42 in), a wingspan of 168–244 centimeters (66–96 in), and a mass of 3–7 kilograms (6.6–15.5 lb); females are about 25 percent larger than males. From Wikipedia.
Now that is a large bird. I would love to see one swoop down and get a fish. Those we saw on 10/11 were very large but a little too far to tell exactly how big.

We saw a big buck swimming across in front of the real Chimney Rock a couple a summers ago. I had always herad they could swim good. He wasn't far from the island when I spotted him and we watched him swim all the way across and then climb out like there was nothing to it. Then he sprinted up the side of the mountain. They are amazing animals.
