It's not exactly at the top of his agenda, but President-elect Barack Obama says there should be a college football playoff to determine a national champion. In fact, he knows exactly what he wants — an eight-team playoff.

In an interview with "60 Minutes," Obama addresses a subject college football fans have debated for many years, and says he will use his influence to create such a system.

"If you've got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses, there's no clear decisive winner. We should be creating a playoff system," he tells CBS' Steve Kroft in an interview to be broadcast Sunday.

According to Obama's proposed system, eight teams would play over three rounds to settle the national champion.

"It would add three extra weeks to the season," he said at the conclusion of a wide-ranging interview. "You could trim back on the regular season. I don't know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this. So, I'm going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it's the right thing to do."

As an Auburn fan, nobody could be more in favor of a playoff than me and I have no problem with Obama expressing his opinion as a fan. However, I sincerely hope he is kidding when he talks about his administration getting involved in this issue. Surely there are more important issues that should merit his attention than college football.

I can only imagine the lobbying by the BcS (capitalization intended because I think that system is mostly BS) and the multitudes of bowl game committees and corporate sponsors that started after that comment. I have problems with the way it is currently run but there are a lot of implications to making this change that he ought to at least give thought to before proposing to "throw his weight around" on an issue that arguably is not in his purview and may not be the best use of his time.

Probably the best outcome of this off the cuff comment is a serious debate and maybe a plan to transition to a playoff system. But lots of people make a living at the current bowl system and it would be a shame to see those jobs lost but maybe even with a playoff system the bowls can survive. Maybe make the bigger bowls the playoff and the lesser bowls like the NIT in college basketball.

"Add three weeks to the regular season . . ." How close would this place the Championship Game to the Super Bowl? What implications would that have?

"trim back on the regular season . . ." Would all teams play three less games - I don't think so? How would you know which eight teams should only schedule 8 or 9 games at the time of scheduling 4-5 years out?

Stick with RULING the country and BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY MR. PRESIDENT ELECT.

I like the fact that there are no more important issues in this country than the college football playoffs? Can I ask why they feels it's necessary to involve government in college football playoffs?

I guess it stands next to the following little piece of history:

On this very day (Tuesday, April 29, 2008 ) your US House will vote to express its "sense" that "there should be established a National Watermelon Month." Later this afternoon, the people's House will move to consider whether to similarly express themselves over "National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day." And then, in a separate bill, it will weigh in on setting aside a day of recognition for the "nation's letter carriers".

We don't need to worry about terrorism, economic crises, or wall street.

By the way, congress spent nearly 2 weeks debating "National Watermelon Month" - - very important legislation. How much $ did the tax payer spend on hotels, cars, meals, etc. for them to debate this very important peice of legislation? No waste in the congress at all!

I agree with you. They should spend their time on the much more important hearings on steroid use of baseball players.
Congress, any Congress, no matter which party leads, makes me want to cry with this stuff.
