I am letting everyone know that the goats are no longer on Goat Island. Upon arriving to feed them recently, two wild dogs were discovered on the island. Unfortunately, the dogs had killed all but one of the goats. The lone goat was rescued and delivered to a safe home. The other goats were taken off the island and disposed of.

We are deeply saddened by this act of nature, but our hopes remain optimistic, that there will one day be goats back on the island.

Thanks for your support,
The Goat Island Project group

I was afraid that would happen when the water went down. Any ideas how they can be stopped?

Well, this will probably upset some of you forum posters but whoever found the wild dogs should have shot the dogs. I hope they did... and I for one love dogs, have a dog, but have no tolerance for wild destructive dogs or whatever. Could have been someone's child, etc.

That is very sad ... but what seems more sad is to put the goats on the island in the first place. How is that humane? They do not have enough food, wild dogs kill them, they have no where to go.

It seems someone is doing this for human enjoyment and not because it will be good for the goats.

Oh how sad. Lighting a candle in memory of the goats that brought smiles to so many faces.

That is very sad. My girls loved the goats. It was a regular stop this past summer.

...(especially the goats) and absolutely do not put goats back on that island.

There is no sense in it other than entertainment for humans....and that makes no sense.

So, no...there is zero sense in it.

Very sad, but unrelated to low water. The water level was lower in 2007, yet it was still deep enough that no dog could walk to the island. And the lower levels don't make the swim from land to island appreciably shorter, at least not short enough for any dog to notice or take advantage of.

and as much as I applaud your efforts to repopulate the island with goats, it doesn't seem like the best thing to do. This isn't their natural habitat, they have no natural means to support themselves (aka food, shelter, etc.), and they are at the mercies of nature (animal and weather).

I know I may get dissed for saying this, but putting defenseless animals on that island is just not humane in my opinion.
