so saying someone is EVIL is humurous ? maybe if you came & volunteered with me a day at Childrens Harbor --see kids who cant walk, are on ventilators 24/7--see the happiness Childrens Harbor brings to them & their families--then you MIGHT see some good The Russells do every day

Wow! They really should change the name to "Russell Harbor" or something, you know? Its kind of misleading with that whole "Children's" thing in there, don't you think?
How much did they make off THAT last year? Does Tom know about this?
But we do agree on the Russells. They are truly the most humanitarian, sinless, omnipotent Gods I have ever met in my life. It is truly amazing that one could have that much money, that much power, do that much business, have that many employess, and not once has ANY of them ever done anything "bad" or entirely self-serving. It never ceases to amaze me. If only we could all be perfect like them, huh?
If heaven does exist, surely it will one day be named for a Russell!

stocking? Vinegar in your eggnog? The vitrol is amazing. Although Russell is your local company, and it may be difficult for you to believe - there are other communities not so far from Alexander City that have lost every textile job that ever was also. And, when we lost them, the former 'family' that founded them isn't nearly as visible as the Russells are. Be grateful for what you have, it could be worse - much worse.

Good works are good works regardless of what you call them. Russell is hardly the only charitable person/organization that has things named after them. I'm not sure why you find this so offensive. And if they make money off their charity, they have more money to do more. From what I can see, everything they do is first class and not ticky-tacky at all.
I'm curious what they did to you that you feel so negative.

I have no problem with the Russells, in fact they are family friends of three generations.
I have MAJOR problems with the company which operates under their name (Russell Lands, NOT Russell Corp), with which they have little to no input (admittedly by their own choice).
My life would not change one iota if Russell Lands folded up the tent and Ben and Luanne moved to Monte Carlo. Funny you mention those other textile companies. That is where our relationship with the Russells started, fighting together to eliminate the competition. But with the demise of Russell Corp, that chapter in our lives closed.
That is what seems to escape many here. Ben Russell and the Russell family have no control over Russell Corp anymore. They actually couldn't care less what happens to Russell Corp (or what's left of it). I have no problem with Russell Corp, they did what they had to do, what we wanted them to do (given the circumstances) and many of us encouraged and prospered from it, including the Russells.
The company Ben started and embraced is an entirely different entity (Russell Lands), and an entirely different story. It serves one ultimate purpose (although it is unspoken), which some of us recognize now. One day all of you will realize it as well, but it will be too late then.
Don't get me wrong, I know there is nothing I can do to change it. And I know my thoughts on these matters serve only to irritate and question. The sooner people realize what is going on, the sooner they may stand up and say "Wait a minute." If all you care about is the lake level this coming Spring, you will see the light when it is too late. If you look at the history of this lake from when it was created to now, and then apply the current environment to that span in the future, you may get it (many still won't). And the really ironic and difficult thing is this:
I don't think Ben wants that to happen either, but it appears that he just doesn't want to be bothered with the day to day machinations of the company he created. He's apparently tired and bored with it, which would explain why he goes along with the "what's the bottom line" philosophy that Russell Lands has created and nurtured for 10 or so years now. I don't necessarily include "Ben Russell" in the entity that is "Russell Lands." Yes, it is his company, but in actuality, he has no more to do with it these days than I do. Can't say I blame him or wouldn't do the same, but I would at least monitor and control the direction of the company that I created. If Ben is actually doing that, then he is apparently in agreement with the direction they are taking. I don't believe he is, and I don't believe he wants to be bothered with that right now. And I'm afraid when he DOES become interested again, it will be too late.
This lake WILL become Lake Lanier, and worse. The only question is when? And is there ANYTHING we can do to stop it?
I doubt it.
I don't think we can, but I hold out hope and keep trying.

one of my wishes for 2009 is that i dont have to read your constant complaints--Russels, weather, lake level, property values, etc etc etc etc--if you are so unhappy at The Lake & with the residents et all, I'm sure a realtor in Miami would love to sell you a condo there--some of us may chip in from our depleted stock accounts to help you make the transition;

I'm confused; what is the problem you have with the company? That they are developing the property around the lake with million dollar homes?
Or is it that they have moved their operations off shore? Did they have a business choice?
Did you used to work for them and get let go?

This is a BIG part of my frustration. Most don't even know which company is which, and what each does.
Learn the history, THEN come back and blast me, if you still think I'm wrong. Ben never cared about Russell Corp (other than the stock price, like most of the rest of us), which is what lead to the creation of Russell Lands.
My problem is with Russell Lands.
Russell Corp is dead, and made many of us a lot of money. I couldn't be happier that they moved offshore, nor could Ben. We voted for it, we encouraged it, and we got upset when people tried to stop or prolong it. In the end, we won, and Russell Corp left our lives forever.
Russell Corp is NOT Russell Lands. Never was, and never would have been. Russell Corp did MUCH more good for this area than Russell Lands ever possibly could. What Russell Corp created, Russell Lands will destroy.

So does bamaalum not realize who started this thread ABOUT Catherine? (Hint: it was bamaalum.) And does bamaalum not realize that he/she has MORE posts in this thread than Catherine?
As for what this forum is for, I think it's safe to say that Russell Lands (that's LANDS; yes, Catherine, you are not alone in knowing that the t-shirt makers are NOT the same as the land-grabbers) qualifies as a Lake Martin topic.

Most of the time I gave was back when it really needed it. These days my support is mostly monetary (at Jim and Ben's request), which is far better for CH than the time I have available, or the work I could do in that time. At some point, one more little old lady smiling during macrame just doesn't have as big an impact as a few thousand dollars.
This discussion has revealed something to me that I missed early on:
It is actually I who should pray for you. (It was difficult for me to realize that in light of the fact that you know everything, but it has become clearer as we have continued).

Catherine, pray if you feel this situation warrants your efforts, personally I do not feel it warrants your time. (One NEVER has to boast about prayer or good deeds.)
“bamaalum” the name indicates an educated University of Alabama individual. I can not believe this to be the case after seeing the “rants” written by he/she. You have pretty much recanted your “complaining & hating someone” even thou you never said that, and yet he/she questioned your education, and continues to “rant” Geez-O-Pete!!
I do feel your pain seeing what has gone on over the years that most will not see until (as you say) until it’s to late.

So much of bamaalum's arguments were about things I never said (hating the Russells, "being educated," not supporting CH, etc...I never said any of those things, but it became obvious that bamaalum certainly wished I had).
But it lead to some good discussion, so I won't fret it.
I would point to last year's "end-around" by Russell Lands to create "Lake City" legislatively as one of the indications that my proposal that "Russell Lands will destroy what Russell Corp created" has some veracity. As Russell Lands becomes more and more unhappy with, and has less and less power within Alex City, suddenly they want their own jurisdiction? I am surprised that so many seem to have already forgotten that (or actually believed it was about covenant and architectural control).
If there ever is a more clear sign, I guess it will be tattoed across the Sun?

What is evil about Russell Lands? What land grabs did they do? Did they do something illegal?
Did they have propety condemned so they could buy it cheaply? Did they quick claim property on delinquent taxes?
Sorry, but I've only owned property here since 2001.
