The Flying Squirrel principle? That is incredible. I'm glad that there are crazy people to do that kind of stuff and get it filmed so I don't have to do it. I'm afraid of heights.

That is nuts, but I like to see people having fun... That sport is gaining popularity.

Speaking of parachuting, are you folks hearing a lot about that Marcus Schrenker in the news down there?
Apparently he intended the plane to go out into the gulf and he would have been considered lost at sea, at least for a while. I've given this a lot of thought today because I'm a pilot and have thought about how one would go about bailing out of an airplane that they were flying. Especially a Piper-PA-46 Malibu Meridian that cruises about 220 knots (about 250 MPH). He would have had to slow down to get out of the plane, thereby increasing the time to get to the gulf coast. Being on autopilot, the plane would remain at the speed he set at the jump unless that plane has programmable autopilot unlike any I'm familiar with (other pilots tell me). The plane almost made it, but he miscalculated time and fuel. I guess that one would have been a Darwin awards candidate if he had killed himself. And to parachute at night... That is nuts too.

I later found this info on his altitude and speeds:

According to FlightAware.com, the aircraft descended from 24,000 feet to 3,900 feet over the course of 10 minutes, beginning at 7:24 pm EST. Controllers apparently also attempted to route the pilot to land at Northeast Alabama Regional Airport (GAD), but the airplane overflew that field.

Just after 8:00 pm CST, the aircraft (type shown below) passed over Sylacauga Municipal Airport (SCD) at 3,800 feet MSL reported. For the next 58 minutes, the aircraft's altitude varied between 3,800 and 4,000 feet on a constant SSW heading, at an airspeed of 125-130 knots.

The Meridian's speed later deteriorated to under 100 knots, and at 9:12 pm the aircraft descended to just 200 feet... where it remained until the last radar echo was reported two hours later, at a recorded speed of 82 knots.

Just saw on CNBC this morning he has been found. It was all money driven.

Hey .... don't you ever sleep? I saw you posted at 1am, but you post at all times. :)

On a news blurb Sunday night they said that every available emergency unit had been sent to Sylacauga Airport awaiting the arrival of a plane in distress that had been rerouted to there. Tthen nothing else till they started tlaking aobut the missing pilot. He was found with his wrist cut. Great he wants to die. Take him back up and throw him out again, but without the parachute. What if tthat plane had landed on a mall, a school, or even a house?

That's interesting... The Life Flight crew live above the Sylacauga FBO. I've not talked to anyone about it, but I'll probably hear eventually how many people responded to the fake emergency.

I had not watched national news in a couple of days... I see this morning that it is a very popular story.

Sleep.... What's that? I worked in IT for many years, often on problems in the middle of the night. That changes you forever.

Just don't burn yourself out. You've created a great site and a public service. We'd like to keep you around awhile.

Not familiar with that one.....

Oh, sorry it's a pilot thing... FBO = Fixed Base Operator

Basically the operator of the airport, not necessarily the owner. Common services are AvGas, Jet Fuel, Tiedowns, Hangar Rentals and Maintenance Services. Most of the time the FBO is a person or company on contract to operate the airport for a city or county. Sometimes you'll find an airport with more than one FBO and they compete against each other.

I heard recently the FBO in Alexander City airport was switching over from being operated by Russell Corp (not to be confused with Russell Lands) and was going to be managed by the city. Something about Fruit of the Loom (a Bowling Green, KY company that now owns Russell Corp) was going to run all flight operations out of Bowling Green, KY and sell one of more jets operated elsewhere, including Alex City. Another example of the bad economy I guess.

He reported his windshield had shattered and he was bleeding. I don't understand why he called in that report. It would appear that he should have jumped and just let the plane continue on to the Gulf to crash. After he called in the report jets were sent up and saw the plane was empty. Glad the idiot was caught.

I imagine under other circumstances he would have thought of that. Gotta figure he was not acting or thinking rational.

Agreed, say nothing, reroute to avoid Eglin AFB and Pensacola NAS, jump out, then splash the plane in salt water.
