We will be building in River Oaks in about a year and a half, and know that economic times have been very rough. We are trying to find builders who have weathered the storm. Please let us know if you have any suggestions. Thanks

The first bit of advice is to not listen to anything you hear on this board. Nothing personal everyone.

You should go to or call the local building supply companies (2 largest are Russell Do-It Center and Lake Martin Building Supply). Find out the LOCAL builders (3) they would recommend for the size of the project. Of course they will recommend people that buy supplies form them but they will be the builders that pay their bills.

After that a lot of it is about personality and the ability to work together and communicate.

true--but getting referrals from happy homeowners also helps; I am more than willing to have a potential home buyer look at the quality of the home my builder [Charles Emfinger]built for me

Be careful when asking about "weathering" the storm...most good builders probably had several different projects that would have or could have affected them. Also a builder that had nothing most likely didn't loose anything..my point is most good builders HAVE been affected..

Good Luck

ANY builder that tells you they haven't is obviously a liar and should be avoided like th plague

Cecil Dean - Dean Construction - Family owned - honest, plain talker - did a remodel for us using just my wife's diagram on a piece of notebook paper. Be happy to show anyone his work on my house in the Dadeville area.

Ralph Hudson is a great builder. He is currently building one in the Blue Creek area that you could walk through. Nice guy and easy to talk to.

Thank you for the advice. We have heard about a few that do so so work and another that only built 2 or 3 homes. We plan to meet them face2face and purchase 8 sets for bids.
I thought about being my own contractor since we met a finisher, cabinet maker, landscaper, and foundations guy.

you might want to reconsider being your own contractor, especially if you need a construction loan--must have a Builders License

Urban Earth, Terry Duncan, Ben Duncan and David Taylor, office on Hwy 63, they did a fabulous job for us. They were wonderful to work with, very professional. We tore down an older cabin and built a new house in 9 months, couldn't be more pleased.

Also unless one is very knowledgeable about residential building, local codes, policies, etc, a good builder will save you money in the long run.
I've advised people for many years to write into your contract that your monies are to pay all of your expenses first before the builder can commingle. May not sound like much, but if things go wrong you have tremendous leverage with the criminal charges you can file.

Give this company a call, they do remodel work and new construction. I think they do the best work and does not cut any corners. If you would like it done right give them a call.

Eddie Graham is an excellent contractor who has built more houses in River Oaks than any other builder. An added benefit is that he lives there. At present, he has a work in progress at the Ridge and only the best are allowed to build there.
Be sure to inquire about his cabinet maker, Tierce Williams. Eddie's number is 256-825-2348.

"At present, he has a work in progress at the Ridge and only the best are allowed to build there."

If you actually believe this, then you opinion is automatically discounted. Just becasue they are attemping to charge $400sf doesn't mean they are better than any other just more expensive. The quality at the Ridge is NO BETTER than any S/D in most any city in the country,. What a joke.

Partly true....there is some very average construction in The Ridge, but there are also homes built to very high standards. What burns me are the builders that try to pass off "average" for "high quality"; in todays market it is no longer working.

Pay the subs, Count the materials, Pay the supplier, Get the waivers. These are perilous times for ALL builders. They can be for you too if you are not prudent.

Matt Peck with TMP Construction did a great job on our remodel. He was a builder in Atlanta for years before relocating to the lake and builds to the top end of the building codes- no corners cut at all- and he gets the job done in a very timely manner. He has an office downtown Dadeville- by the shop- Blue Hydrangea- office number is 256-825-0967
