this Summer?? According to the LM Homepage.
The increase form 3 to 5 is apparently due to the dreadful accident last Summer, and continued complaints from residents/visitors/Boaters/etc.
That is a large increase in enforcement resources.
Since "They" are reading the Forum or e-mail, and as a result added 2 officers on LM,
What do WE want them to DO to justify the increase?
WE asked for it, so let's give them some ideas about Priorities.
I'll start.
#1- Crack down on speed/wakes in narrow coves (not open water).

FIRST they should inform all residents that the air and the water belong to everyone. That being the case the lake residents should not interfer with the use of such air and water by the general public.

If the AMP will do this maybe some of the residents won't expect them to enforce laws that don't exist.

SECOND the AMP should inform property owners and their guests that being drunk on your dock is public drunkeness and that they are subject to arrest for it as much as the drunks in boats are.

I'm guessing Kizma has some fun neighbors....

couldn't ask for better neighbors. and their kids are the greatest. my problem is that I have friends, who visit the lake and live on their boats or camp out, who have encountered problems with of lake property owners. it seems that some lake property owners think that they own the air and the water near their homes. those with the least water frontage seem to be the worst offenders.

As a property owner, I have no problem with people camping or staying on their boat but what I do have a problem with is them dumping their waste into the lake and leaving trash behind. It's not that I think I "own" the water but I do have an investment in seeing that the water remains clean and that the undeveloped areas aren't littered with trash. I doubt the people that do these things would like to see me dump my waste or my trash in their front yard.
I'm not saying that everyone who boats or camps isn't responsible, but unfortunately there are those who aren't. You know, when they make rules there is usually a basis in abuse for the rulemakers to have decided to do something in the first place.

This is sad to me. I have enjoyed LM for many years (as a property
owner) and have enjoyed the peace and serenity of a weekday
cruise when not many boats are out. Now I wonder how many times
I will be stopped since there will be 5 officers and me. How
relaxing will it be on the weekend to see blue lights flashing
everywhere you go. From the posts last summer, will we not be too
concerned about being stopped for things such as a person sitting
in front of you on your pontoon boat and the lack of action from
the MP about important issues as you all have mentioned. I witnessed a boat collision in front of my house at 9:00 PM but
the MP would not respond because there were no serious injuries
but was alcohol involved?
In this time of troubled economy and budget shortfall, should we
add more expense or should we expect better service and concentrate on the important problems. Will there be pressure
to issue tickets for minor offenses to justify their existence?
Just a few thoughts

You made an interesting post. You don't want more MPs but you want them to respond to every boat mishap. You can't have both. They probably couldn't respond to the mishap because they were too short handed. Why do they hang out at chimney rock? Because that's where the problems are, or will start if they're not a visible force. Hopefully, all five will have radar guns.

Rarely have I seen the MPs on a week day stop anyone.

You are so right. My point was that if they concentrated on the
more serious infractions they would have more time to deal with
these problems instead of stopping people who have not caused
any problem. I also would like them to have radar guns and
decibel meters and a way to keep people from creating large wakes
by our docks. For clarification, when the MP's were contacted
about the collision there was an officer on duty but he didn't
think he should respond. I just didn't agree with his decision.

I would have thought that the number was higher since my visit to Wind Creek. I saw six AMP boats there. Perhaps they are towed to other locations and just kept there when not needed. Anyway, I wonder if the additional officers will mean that Ned will make more than one trip per day up past Real Island.

I understand. I just have not bought all the stories on the forum about being stopped without cause. Sure they do safety checks, but I don't buy all the abuse of power claims. I think the MPs do as good a job as possible.

I do not mind that they added an officer or two, but like most government jobs, they have to bring in revenue to justify the pay. This means more tickets and looking for more ways to generate the income to justify their service. Maybe they should get in the towing business on the side. This would be a service that is needed on the water. It's a large lake, but they all seem to hang out at the rock most of the day on the weekends.

I approached a LM MP office early last year (in March) and had him do a complete check of my boat (lights, horn, throw, reg., etc.) we spoke for a few minutes, and I was never looked at or pulled over the rest of the year. I may have just been lucky, but I plan on doing this again this year.

This may be a good idea for people that don't want to get hassled numerous times. If they recognize you they may pass you by.

Law enforcement is a oddity. Allow the small stuff to get by and more people tend to push the envelope, so more big stuff gets out of hand.
Look at sports refs to see what goes on. At first they let the teams play. If it gets too out of hand, they start calling all the small stuff. Its a delicate balancing act. But the players behavior dictate how the refs will handle it.

I understand the need for MP presence on the lake but it would go a long way if they were a little more courteous. My 4 friends and I had an officer stop us and to run a safety check on our boat, which is completely fine. He found that nothing was wrong and he was visibly aggravated that we were not doing anything wrong and became more and more agitated that he couldn't find anything to ticket us for. I was the designated driver for the boat that day and my friends had a cooler of beer (we are all older than 21). The officer told us that my dog was a nuisance because he was barking at him... obviously he was not a dog person but that was a little ridiculous. We were all as cooperative as can be as we complied to his requests of showing life vests and all safety equipment. The thing that really got me was that before he left he told us to "get rid of the beer" .... which is ridiculous... we had a designated driver, we weren't tubing or wake boarding or anything that could be considered dangerous. We were floating in the water with the dog and talking. His attitude was completely unnecessary and he was incredibly rude. Just because he is a police officer does not mean that he has the right to talk down to everyone, especially when we were in compliance with the law and being responsible. He left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not soon forget how we were treated.

You may not buy the stories, but they are true. I have heard many like the one from AU Tate and witnessed one myself. I know AU Tate personally and he is a fine (and very respectful) young man; I believe him 100% and I know what I saw on another occasion. I'm all for having marine police around, but in my opinion their priorities were wrong last summer. They also had a serious problem with attitude.
